I've been starting preliminary investigations on buying a tractor, and think I've got it down between an MX5100 HST and a 4400 HST. Based on the suggestion of a guy on this site, I asked for a quote from Barlow Equipment in Kentucky for an MX, with the 8 series loader, quick attach, rear tire fill with beet pulp, HST and aggie tires. The price came in $6000 less than the local dealer.

Many folks get a quote from Barlows and then use that to re-negotiate with their local dealer(s). Since all dealers have differing overhead costs, there will be some differences, but in the end, one has to make a decision just how much difference one can afford.

Lots of people on here have bought from Barlow's with no complaints.

As BP says plus how much more one is willing to pay someone for the same exact item/product/tractor they can get some where else for less of their (hard earned) money.
I started buying at Barlows seven years ago because of their better price and stayed with them thru eleven more transaction because of their price and being a great dealer.
Local is good but knowing local is charging more money for something is something I look at and consider when I purchase most anything. I'm usually straight forward and tell the seller where I can get it and for how much. When they won't match or get close then I feel they are more concerned about their profit than my financial needs to save a few dollars.
It's just business, not personal. There is always a decision of who takes the hit, seller or buyer and in this case the seller is making a profit and more tractors can be ordered from Kubota and at the same price as other dealers.

I would buy at Barlow's without a second thought. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near close enough.

Just have to add to this thread. Barlow's will be delivering my new Grand L3540 in a week or so. Now I have 2, yes 2 Kubota Dealers with in 12 miles of me in different directions. Both dealers are very nice people as a mater of fact I bought the last 2 tractors form one of them. But when I was looking for the 3540 and wanting to trade my low hour B3200 TLB in on. Each of the locals lowed balled my current tractor on trade in and added price increase to the 3540.Dealers said" It's just business, not personal"So low and behold I called Brady and felt his price was more in line with my idea of a fair price for my trade and a more then fair price for the new 3540. I would have liked to buy local but all cost considered pointed me to Barlow's, now if the difference was $400. or so ,no brainier but it was not. They both seemed to not want my mint, low hour TLB on trade, now keep in mind both dealers are large in size and volume. I know all about the o% interest on new tractors and the % associating for used tractors, but come on, after all it is business, not personal when it comes to cost either way, right?

Slightly off topic; maybe one of the dealers here can enlighten me/us. Is there a one price fits all from Deere/Kubota, etc, or can a volume dealer get a better price than the local guys? $6000 seems a mighty big difference!

The difference has to be inconsequential from one dealer's cost to another, other than shipping. No way it is $6K. Overhead varies GREATLY from one state to another and one dealer, sitting on paid for property versus the dealer paying huge building/land leases. It's been stated here by dealers before that everyone pretty much pays the same.

I have been buying Kubotas for 7 years now and live in North Central CT. I am on my fourth Kubota and each time I go to purchase and trade I go 3 dealers in CT, 3 dealers in Ma and White's Tractor Supply in New york. The last time and this most recent time 3 weeks ago I once again went with White's because the CLOSEST any of the dealers this time and last were to their quotes was 5,000.00 more and as much as 10,000.00. And that still took into consideration the 600.00 added for delivery. I am not an idiot but most of the people around here must be if that is how much they are willing to take it in the shorts. Trades are tricky but on a straight purchase 6000.00 dollars is a LOT but no surprise to me. The actual costs on these tractors are kept tight to the vest but it is easy to extrapolate there is more mark up than many may think. It's called whatever the market will bear. I will keep business local for a few hundred but not for a few thousand. I work to hard for my money to be giving it away. The threat of well if you need warranty work done or repairs the dealer will treat you like carp. I would not know because I really haven't had any need yet except this most recent purchase of my GL3940 requires a windshield wiper line to be repaired and White's will be sending out a repair truck to care of it. Most of the dealers around here both orange and green have real attitudes. Maybe they don't need the business and can get by with gouging and treating people like carp but that does not fly with me. Go with the dealer from out of state, Barlow's obviously has been treating a lot of people well considering the feedback from this site alone. He obviously truly wants your business. Don't let the local guys hold you hostage, life is too short for those kind of games.
