I originally thought about pole barn because of what my friends and neighbors have. But after doing some more research, I starting looking at all steel buildings. The material prices seem to be comparable. Once the anchor bolts are in place in concrete, the steel building goes together like an erector set with the help of a crane or telehandler. The metal trusses give you an open span for more interior room for loft space and head room.

What are people's experiences with all steel type buildings? What do you like-dislike, pros and cons?

All I can say is those steel building companies must be really busy. I called three different companies and not one of them called me back. Went with a pole building.

Have you considered all steel arch type buildings?

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and give you more clear, open, and usable space inside. They are also geared toward the do it yourself market.

You can get a look through the internet at companies like steelmaster and u.s. buildings to name a couple.

A big drawback is that you really only should have doors or windows on the ends.

Some food for thought.

I've contacted a couple of them and they have been very responsive so far.

I just didn't like the looks of them. You can't add on to the sides and side windows are probably out of the question.

I liked the idea of steel building because of the extra ceiling room in the middle. Where are you at and what are the prices? The steel building Co's I called were all here in Omaha, Ne. I wanted to get 3 bids and compare prices to pole buildings. The 3 bids I got for pole buildings were all 24-26k for a erected, insulated 50x64x12 w/7.5 OC trusses designed to carry a ceiling. No site prep or cement/flat work.

The one quote I got was for a 50X60X12, 5/12 pitch. Base $13k, accessories (8 insulated windows) 2k, doors~2k (2x 10'X10', 8'x8' and 3'x7'), 4"insulation for whole building 2.5k, total without tax delivered to site $19.5k.

I would need to do ground prep, concrete piers or slab and erect.

CTyler and JEP...........
How about the best of both...built like a pole barn, doors and windows anywhere, wooden poles with no ground contact, with steel trusses for head clearance and room for hoist or lift, steel or shingle roof, steel or wood sides, with brace strapping..?
Draw backs........you build it. They supply the steel trusses, brackets, wind hardware and plans, which includes a material list for the lumber. A friend of mine built one, very nice.

Take a look on EBAY.

They have steel frames. You set the steel frame, and then you connect your own lumber to the frame to form the walls and roof.

Since this is a frame with no roof truss, there is additional clear space under the peak of the roof.

They have several sizes and eave heights.
