I had a tough time finding someone at first, but one of the local contacts I had who does excavation work on the side came through. After watching him on a Bobcat S220 Track Loader I realized that a compact tractor was not the first choice for removing heavy clay earth for a barn pad. In any case, we had the driveway extended back about 100 ft, and the pad built for a 30x48 pole barn with a 24' front porch. The starting surface was close to level, so it was dug out 6''. He packed it in 2'' lifts first with the skid loader, and then with a compactor. We left the driveway with the base material only for now until the equipment for the barn and cement truck are finished tearing it up at which point we will put some #73's with fines to finish it off. Barn should go up in the next 4-6 weeks.
