Their proposing that this truss would be built on site by adding the lower member to the existing rafters.

looking at my truss softwere, a 30' 4/2 25-5-1 sissors has a bottom cord force of 4600lbs tension at the heal (you have to make that connection to the rafter)

So I presume it would have the same force on the other end. Is that correct? What type of fastening method is necessary to withstand that force? I have not discussed that in detail with the design people for this specific design. I know they are aware of such things as they talked about how many square inches were available and what type of nails to use when we discussed some other ideas.

This is the clearance I need for the GMC motorhome and for a two post car hoist.

Are you thinking your going to raise the motorhome with that hoist? I don't think that will work. I think Eddie was on the right track with building new. Or maybe add one of the carport type structures to the entrance of the barn and enclose that. You could use tarps or plastic for winter use, and remove for a nice shaded area to work for summer work. Your barn isn't also air conditioned is it?

No - the two post hoist will not raise the MH, it's too heavy and the MH frame would not work with standard hoisting methods. The barn is not air conditioned, yet. This is all part of a barn=>shop conversion project. I'm doing some math on Eddie's new building suggestion however. One of my overall goals to never have to do mechanic work crawling around on cold wet ground. I've done that for way too many years and one of the goals of moving to the country was to have a space where I could work in relative comfort, well at least warm and dry.

Quick note - more to come later. I redid all my math and will be using the modified scissors truss. Thanks for the input it helped me sort things out.
