here are a few shots of yesterdays barn raising. My customer had a crew put up this post and beam oak 24x 24 horse barn. frame went up between 7:00 and 3:00 notice the crane, i dont think it had any hours on it. what a great sight to see my trees, as 8x8 going up as this barn.

Woody,I've never seen such HUGE framing timbers on such a small building....WOW!!! Looks like you did a great job on the trees,that structure will be around for a day or two.

How many trees did that building/job translate to...?

Do you happen to know the average number of trees used in a standard platform construction/average home...?

That's a beautiful building Woody! Looks like it'll be around, uh... forever!!! Nice solid construction. I recall you milling the timbers, do you do the joinery as well? Very nice /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I think it took 40 some trees to cut the pieces for the barn, with some of the 4 x 6 and smaller having already been cut 2 years prior. I know that I cut 5000 bd ft of framing timbers for the 24 x 24 barn and a 12 x 12 addition that is to go up in a few weeks. I did not cut the mortise and tennons, but am thinking of trying a few to see if this method would be one I can try. I too thought that 8 x 8 was over kill for the building size, but was reminded that the size was defined most by the amount of material that would be left after the joints were cut.

Anytime you want to try some timber framing just give me a call. While you were watching that barn go up, I was working on taking one down. This was an old "Onion barn" in Danvers, Mass. that will be re-erected in Ipswich, Mass at the Cuvilly Arts Center in July. The cranes sure do make the work go faster. It is quite likely that they used a gin pole to put this up originally.

As for post widths, it often comes down to a combination of strength and aesthetics. Oak is quite stron but also shrinks and checks a lot when drying (when compared to white pine).
Nice looking project - I think I saw some pictures of it in the Nashua Telegraph.
