Barn Tack Room Ceiling Advice

Nice barn Randy. Are you going to seal the wood? Lot of work but it will make cleaning and/or disinfecting super easy in the future over bare wood.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but the bottom 2 boards are treated lumber for ground contact. We discussed sealing the wood and looked at several barns, some sealed and some not. Our mare has allergy issues and we decided not to seal the wood, as the sealant would risk a problem with her and then we would be stuck.

I had already decided to do conduit for the electrical.

For a sink and water, the current tack room on the other side of the barn currently has a sink, water heater and washer/dryer, so we are already set. My wife wants out of there to get into a bigger space.

Thanks Ag, I forgot to mention that on each side of the door is a Simpson brand threaded anchor bolt through the bottom plate into the 6" concrete floor which are both accessible via a small inspection plate allowing enough room to swing a socket wrench for possible removal.

well, i have tried everything to keep them d**n mice out of our tack room, but to no avail. even the lazy barn cat, that sleeps in the tack room, doesnt fully work.

they chew through anything. the barrier board and drywall will hold them back a week.

if i had to do it all over again, id install a 1/4" x 1/4" steel mesh before i laid my walls. like we do in the garden to keep the critters out.

the only smart thing i did was to use bx cable (metal encased wiring) to wire the room. at least the mice cant eat through that.

i would think the steel truss that exists could support a lid. but im not a structural engineer....

We have the smae problem with the barn cat. Every once and awhile, he realizes that we are wondering why we have him around, and a few dead rats or rat parts will show up, but then goes back to sleeping all of the time.

I was wondering about putting the hardware cloth on the outside of the stud walls to try to slow the rats/mice down from chewing into the tackroom
