We accomplished the same thing once , but we jacked up the house and added 2 courses of block . It took 4 days .

Thanks for the replies. The reason for the removing the matieral is to change the depth from 7 ft to 8 ft, and allow for a 4 in thick floor. It is in a old commercial building, no poking holes in walls!! A 7 ft basement is ok for storage, but 8 ft is allowed to be used as commercial space. I guess at the amount of matieral and difficulty make it a no go.

We did that back in the early 80's I think it took us a week and half or so with 3 of us hauling dirt and two people digging, we rotated & hauled dirt out into a bobcat that shuttled dirt into a low area on the property.

I think the worst part was 80 years of feet stomped dirt was about like pick ax on concrete to break it up. first 10 inches came up in big chunks & hand loaded into buckets. Swing was really bad as the 5'6" feet of ceiling didn't let much of a swing. We only went down to get about 7 feet inside & was maybe 1200 or so sq feet. Still was a LOT of work even for the group of us. Place was my brother-n-law's brother (me & my cousin by marriage did 50% of the work & the old guys (been in their 40's then) did mostly driving & pick ax.

Is it possible to get one of those compact tool carriers in there with some kind of ramp?

I vote for getting mi amigos down at the orchard. After my boss discovered his brand new well's water line was hooked up wrong and the backhoe had gone already he simply had the guys dig it all back up with shovels on a Sat and Sunday. I couldn't believe it when I came back from a weekend of marketing!

Hey the recent waterpump thread gave me an idea...turn all the dirt into one big slurry and use a trash pump to suck it up and out! :D

If the property is to be used as commercial space what are the code requirements for access/regress? If people are down there they need at least two paths of regress for fire or other. Consider a regress window similar to homes when a bedroom is in the basement. Excavating for the regress would open a path for a skid loader to access/regress. Much easier work.

How are you going to get the concrete in there?
