Basic science of Hydraulics?

MKIHALL,

You should definitely educate yourself about all aspects of a tractors potential, not only about hydraulics, but all things concerning a tractor. A well educated person in these things can ask more intelligent questions, and be able to make a better deal. I would make a list of all the things I wanted in a tractor, and then budget for that. Think about used tractors also. Does it have all the things you desire in a tractor? Is the price within reason.

Is it just tractor or a tractor and a bunch of implements you want?

Yes, more is better, but more usually cost more. Do your homework well, and you will be glad you did obtain all the info before shopping.

slowzuki,

Your tractor implement hyd pump at 9.8 GPM's at 2500 psi will take about 17 HP.
If your power steering psi is set for 1500, then the 4.5 GPM will take about 5 HP.
Thanks J J. I was thinking Slowzuki had more than a couple gpm flow on his tractor. :)

Thx Kim, so basically its the surface area of the diameter of the piston minus the SA of the diameter of the rod, I had a mental block getting here that I think you have successfully removed
-Slowzuki; so then in my CCYanmar example if the two pumps are serial there is no gain in fact it may detract due to routing and obstructions, but if one pump is only loader/backhoe, and the other Steering/transmission it may result in smoother/quicker implement use, provided PSI max for implements is comparable to competitors?
Transit: Nice link, pics always make thinking easier, thank you
Duct Tape; Yes they don't make it easy to make an informed decision, seems they want you to go with your gut, I've run into similar problems evaluating leaf blowers. As to the mechanical/Leverage advantage I agree and wonder how that plays into the placement of single cylinder loader buckets and any risk of premature metal stress

Yes, thanks, I'm trying, FYI to me the tractor is simply the implement vehicle, I have about 300 yards of piped drainage trenches to dig and then I'd like to remove some earth triangles (a= 8-10', b= 4-6', c= 9-12') to create multiple terraced levels held by stone walls with proper footings and drainage. My lot is just under 2 acres, I'm in no great hurry as I enjoy the challenge. However, I work real hard for my money (just as many of you guys I'm sure) so when I spend it I like to make sure I don't regret it, part of my need for understanding stems trying to quantify how much better/faster a (without naming names) CUT tractor will be for my needs compared to a SCUT, especially since I don't plan to mow, and the dollars will be different.

Really enjoyed all of your responses, its cool learning new stuff whether I need it or not. Thank you!
