Bass Pro Shops to Acquire Cabelas

I spent many an hour with my nose buried in that catalog when I was a kid. Herters in Waseca MN.

Yup! Me too! That catalog was thicker than the Sears catalog (probably explains why they went belly up). I cleaned up my tackle boxes last week and see that I still have some of their stuff in there. A friend of mine still has one of their catalogs on his coffee table (getting rather fragile now).

We used to order handguns, and knives from them. Of course everything they had was "model perfect" or some such moniker. And I thought us southern hillbillies were windbags. We could not hold a candle to those northern boys.
But it was interesting reading, and the JP Sauer and sons revolvers we ordered weren't too bad, and the price sure was right.

I don't think their respective territories overlap that much (BassPro largely southern, Cabela's in the north). Gander Mountain may be at risk though.

Brand new BassPro AND Cabela's about 5 miles from each other down here. I see one of them closing even though just opened.

I really like cabela's, Bass Pro not so much.

Cabelas is geared more toward serious western hunters. Things like optics, hunting clothing, boots, tents, etc are at a different level. Bass Pro is geared more toward cheap hunting clothing, blinds, corn flingers, hand warmers, scent spray, tree stand, plastic rattling horns, doe in heat, trail cameras, etc for a Southern and Eastern hunter who rarely gets more than a 200 yards from the pickup. You won't find a guide or serious elk hunter in Wyoming who uses some Bass Pro binoculars or red head clothes/boots while Cabelas Euro optics and guide gear/boots is among the best in the world like Swaro, Zeiss, Sitka, UA, Kenetrek, etc...
