A couple of times a year I find a bat just like JohnK's hanging in a corner of my workshop. I don't know if it is the same bat each time, but everytime I grab him with pair of gloves, he has that look so well descibed by 3RRL. They sure have big teeth!

They have some awful big choppers to just chew a bug. They say that bats' teeth are so sharp that you wouldn't realize they bit you. It seems as though you would feel those babies....

It's sad I had to send him to Bat heaven but better than letting him starve to death. I would have hated to see him suffer....

There is a little girl in Indiana currently suffering from a very serious case of rabies. She was bitten on the arm by a bat back in June or July in her bedroom. Now she is suffering in Riley's Childrens Hospital. They do not know if she will make it or not. Rabies can stay dormant in humans for up to a year before any symptoms show up. Usually once they show up, it is too late. Be very careful around any wild mammal... bats, raccoons, skunks, etc... Rabies is transmitted by saliva. So, around here, if they find a bat flying around in a child's room they don't take any chances and the poor kid gets rabies shots just in case one drop of bat saliva got onto the child while the bat was flying overhead.

Pretty scarry stuff but doesn't warrant an extermination of bats. Their bennifits far outweigh the risks. I believe they said this is the first case of human rabies in that county since 1989. Suggetions are to just bat-proof your home like you would mouse-proof it. The small bats can get into spaces the same size mice can.

Handling bats, even with gloves, should be done with caution. Wash everything well with dissenfectant or bleach water. The gloves should be washed, too.;)
