Bathroom Ventilation Fan,, Is There A QUIET one?

/ Bathroom Ventilation Fan,, Is There A QUIET one? #41
We installed both Nutone and Panasonic in our bathrooms recently. We found that either 'can' be rather quiet, but the difference is really in the size of the fan and the duct. The Panasonic's we installed are much larger than the Nutone, and with a larger duct. 4" is minimum for a small fan, 6" - 8" works much better for a master bath.

There are charts to correctly size the exhaust fan recommended. After determining the cfm recommended buy the better quality fan no smaller than recommended - and 1 size larger if possible. Good quiet exhaust fans are not cheap but the do seem to last forever. Oh, BTW - giving it a clean-up every few years does make a difference.

When we built our house I was the Electrician. We used turbine fans in the roof. When I plumbed the bathroom fans I used 4" rigid plastic pipe, T'd together and ran vertically to one of the turbine fans. In cold weather the fan in the guest bathroom dripped condensation. I had to go into the attic and change the plumbing horizontally to the eave. Lesson learned.
