Batteries

Don't make the mistake I did several years ago. The clerk told me Autozone's marine starting/lighting battery was preferable for farm equipment that would be parked for months off-season. It only lasted a couple of years. I think it wasn't built tough enough for a tractor's jolts and vibration.

I asked at the Farm & Fleet store. There are 2 different Marine grade batteries. 1 is like a car battery, usually group-24 or 27 as the Marine 'starting' battery type. The other marine grade battery is a group-27 or -31 that is a true deep-cycle, gel-cell. These work GREAT for farm use. BUT, the down side is, these batteries are not friendly with hot weather above 90F.

Thanks. Batteries give such long and good service yet it's always painful to have to buy them. Plus, one of the few things that has some value, even when expired.

EDIT: Looked up the Niagara Falls Location. Halfway to Buffalo from the border. A bit far in a 3/4 ton truck.

3/4 ton truck?
Must be really heavy battery!

It's the crazy thing I drive around in destroying the planet. Tried buying a Diesel SMART car for errands and the insurance wanted to double my premium!

Hey, my state this year has tripled the registration fees for EV and hybrids. WHY? Because they don't pay for the fuel taxes and infrastructure maintenance. AND, even if you got an older EV, there is no break in the those fees.

Ever look at the re-charge cycle times? I got more things to do in life than to babysit an EV. LOL

CNG isn't too bad, but folks just don't understand how it could really benefit overall. Large trucks and school buses run on it as well.

My opinion of the "Smart" is that it is NOT very smart.
For less money, one can buy a Corolla, and it should go for at least 200,000 trouble free miles.
Mileage won't be quite the same, but 200,000 mile overall cost will very likely be less for the Corolla.

EV owners charge overnight at home, not en route. Only the Teslas have decent inter-city charging infrastructure. With the latest hardware near 300 miles range, then 15 minute charge to go the next 150 miles, this should get you home ok.

It's an evolving field. I almost bought a Chevy Bolt (238 mile EPA range) for the 100 miles I run back and forth frequently between home in town and the ranch. But with a realistic appraisal of how much stuff I carry each trip, I reluctantly decided to keep the 21 year old Outback a little longer because that much cargo space is essential. I now expect to buy a Tesla Y, as soon as they offer a tow package on it.

Marine batteries are not as good for some reason as automotive batteries. I only usually get two years from marine batteries...maybe a third season. But automotive batteries even cheap ones last that long and usually double. I know I have had a few boats and still have one we use often in the summer.

Cause of this reason I split my system on the pontoon up. I have a house battery that's a deep cycle that runs all the electronics and I have the motor isolated on a cranking battery that is just one of the value start batteries from Walmart.
