Batteries

If it dropped to 12.2 volts, and loses .5 v in a few hours, disconnected, it's just a bad battery.

they will settle down from the static charge pretty fast. If it rests at 12.5v it clearly has diminished capacity but I don't think that we can say just cause it settled down to its resting volts that quick its bad.

What you need to do is charge it up fully and then let it sit 8 to 12 hours, that's when you should take a reading, not an hour after you charge or whatever, see what you dropped too. If its only 80% of the battery capacity its not necessarily a bad battery if it starts your tractor or whatever at that voltage its just weak and has a diminished capacity.

Theoretically yes - by a tiny bit. But in reality there are so many things that impact battery life I doubt you'll be able to point to any one of them as the final cause. If battery life was that easy to predict, I'd like to think that battery manufacturers would have figured it out long ago.

A year ago I found a stash of 4 batteries buried under some junk at the back of the barn by the flood here in 2013. They were all originally part of an old solar system we were making back then. So all had sat for at least 3 years and were in the 11 to 11.5 volt range with almost no amperage remaining. One might have been 10.9 or so. I put the smart charger on each in turn at 2 amps for a week....then did it again.
One battery recovered completely and instantly (Optima blue top) and it's now in a friend's plow truck all ready to serve for another winter. Another - this time an AGM marine - failed to ever get above 12 volts. I pitched it along with a very old Optima Red top that did much the same. The last battery looked for a while like it would recover. It took a charge to 12.8 volts quickly, but would drop to the low 12s within a day. Pitched that one too.
luck,

You may have done this but save them with your scrap metal. Those bigger batteries were bringing close to $10 at scrap yard. now there down around $5 , but if your already making a trip!!

I will try to keep us all updated on the life of it. If the thing turns out to lady 2 years it wasn't a deal. If it lasts 5 years I would call it a good buy and longer than that great. The last walmart batteries I have had lasted 7 pkus years each. I had one I think it was 8 years old when it gave out.

So now do we need to mark on our 2019 and 2024 calendars "check for clemsonfor battery update"? :)

And
turns out to lady 2 years
? Was that turn out to last? :)
pkus? plus?

Does your keyboard shift sometimes? :)

It's not quite that bad. The 12.2 volts was after sitting unused for months. I think I last used the backhoe sometime around Easter. I should have put the little 'license plate' solar charger on it months ago.

12.52 volts was the reading several hours after disconnecting the overnight trickle charger. I don't think a reading moments after taking the charger off is meaningful.

I put the little solar charger on, and hope that will maintain it usable.

Man I don't know what I was trying to say???

The longer it lasts the better:confused2::confused3:

Terrible thing when a man needs a battery or worse batteries.

Need a couple to start generators with D722 Kubota 3 cyl engines. Kept inside an unheated space, power available for charging.

A friend sells thousands of batteries a year but they have gone to AGMs and also Dynacharge. I don't have use for either.

Not sure what size I need, but I don't believe in buying anything bigger than I need.

Canadian Tire?
Walmart (Exide Everstart)?
Costco (Interstate)?
Interstate?
JD, Strong Box?

I have actually had great service from Walmart batteries. But that means nothing. Vendors change constantly, manufacturing plants change, specs change. By the time you figure out you got a good battery, everything has changed.

Just buy one at Wal-Mart. I am testing their value start line of batteries right now. I have two in service. One is three years old and one is two.

I use to like advance Auto batteries for years cause they had similar prices or a tad higher than walmart prices then they raised their prices. The thing that made them a deal before was you could always get a $40 off coupon for store pickup. I would always use it and get a $100 battery for $60 when Walmart was a tad higher prices or at that time once a Walmart battery was out of the free period they wouldn't do anything. Or you could get a three year battery at advance for the price of a two year free replacement battery at Walmart. I quit buying them at advance when they started charging like $120-140 for batteries. I now buy them at Walmart again.

Batteries it seems never go on sale. Cheap Chinese Plastic and electronic stuff does, but not resource-rich stuff like a battery. Plus, it's never an impulse decision, so people wouldn't go running somewhere to buy a battery on sale.

Pepboys has 25% off batteries if you purchase online and p/u in store. They're Champion with 4yr warranty. Might be worth a look.

Thanks. I will be going across the border fairly soon. That is a GOOD sale!
