Battery and hydraulic question

On my 4120 i noticed today paint peeling and signs of rust starting to form on the battery case right behind the grill. Anyone else experience this and did you solve with a gel cell battery? My battery is original and will need replacing soon. Also how much of a bear is it to replace hydraulic fluid and filter on a 4120 power reverser? I've done the oil and filter myself, very easy just curious about any problems servicing hydraulic system.

Don't know about your JD but my Kubota is super easy to change the oil and filter. Changing just the filter is a bit more complicated as the whole reservoir will drain out thru the filter housing if you don't get the new filter on quickly. Some folks say to put a shop vac hose into the filler hole and make it air tight then turn on the vac so when you remove the old filter, the vacuum is sucking the oil back up so none runs out.

A sealed lead acid battery(one without caps) should solve your corrosion problem without having to go to the expense of a gel cell battery. Remove the battery and clean the rust and corrosion from the painted surface, mix up some baking soda and water and brush it on the corroded areas to neutralize the acid then wash it down good, let it dry and put on some epoxy paint. That should hold it for a while. Occasional cleaning with water hose to flush off the battery is a good idea.

I had a "standard" battery on my previous tractor which resulted in the same situation. A good thorough cleaning and some heavy duty bridge paint fixed the tractor. A new sealed lead acid battery solved the problems. I have a sealed battery on the new tractor and I still wash the battery area occasionally. Old habits die hard.
