Well, looked what happened to phone companies and copper wire. They lost customers to cellular, and then they don't have enough to maintain the copper to land line users, yet they have to buy law.

Same thing will happen to electric utilities. They are required by law to provide power over the lines, but people want to force them to buy electricity from every mom and pop solar install on their private residence. They will not get enough revenue to maintain their lines and equipment.

And gasoline taxes that support roads. EVs don't use gas, but use the roads. They have to come up with an equitable way to tax all road users the same, regardless of what fuel they choose. Guess what that is? Metered mileage tax. You pay according to how many miles you drive AND how much your vehicle weighs. It's the only fair way, yet many are gonna cry WHAAAAAA!!!!

Wyomings road tax for EV's is formulated using 13mpg average. Not fair by any ones measuring stick.

I have everything to learn about working with a solar installation. I'm not sure that I would load back to the grid because I see that as big complicated and expensive on the utilities part. I envision the possibility of some type of double throw switch like you could do for a backup generator between the solar system and the AC from the grid so I would have access to either one.

It might be no different than a generator transfer switch. ON-OFF-ON.
However, it would get old having to flip a switch every time you wanted to change sources unless the solar/battery bank provided most of your needs and you didn't have to go to the grid very often.

I guess it could be manual to start with for proof of concept. At some point it would be ideal to have it automated. You could have it changed to AC is if the battery dropped to a certain level and if charged up to certain level you can switch it back to the solar system.

While we are rebuilding the Leaf it got totaled with a new like 40 kilowatt hour battery pack. It could be reconfigured into a powerwall type setup for the house and I would have to get the inverters etc.

I see lots of ads of how you can get solar in with no money up front and recover your cost with what you sell back to the grid if you want that route so I'm sure there's many options and more will come up as this becomes more typical.

I'll go WHAAAAA! when the low bid device shorts and fry's the electric brain in my vehicle.

Canoo, an EV startup company that hasn’t sold a vehicle yet, announced they will build a factory outside of Tulsa, Ok.
A short run production company in the Netherlands will initially build vehicles for them

Does the moon supply enough light for the solar panels?
The sun is about 400,000x as bright as a full moon (-26 apparent magnitude vs -12; every 5 magnitudes is a factor of 100). Obviously the moon is on the average considerably dimmer than that as well.

Considering that solar cells shut down in shaded daylight due to insufficient light, nighttime charging via the moon is a no-go.

Sort of odd, but some folks get some (not much, but some) Solar PV in Alaska from a Full Moon during the Winter along with reflected snow. Internal resistance of the Silicon Solar PV goes down in Cold Weather, so deep Alaska nights allow this.
