Protect your hands with rubber gloves and wear old clothes in case any acid gets on anything. Immediately take off the clothes when done working on the battery alternator replacement and wash them separately from any others. Have baking soda and water source at the worksite to use, especially if any acid makes its way to your eyes. You can rinse down all metal on the tractor that might have been exposed to the acid or fallout from fumes Put the old battery in a cardboard box with the bottom lined with a plastic bag and take it to a battery recycling center or auto parts store. Explain to them that it was cooked so they use added precautions with it.

The old submariners could always tell which guys were tasked with watering the batteries every day, as their clothes all had holes eaten in them or at least white spots on them.

Yep. I have had a battery blow up on me. It's not a happy-making thing! Took the top off, pretty cleanly, too. It was quite impressive how long it took to come back down. I didn't have a stopwatch on it, but it was more than a handful of seconds.

That was mentioned back in post 6, "goggles and a full face shield". are better for liquids than glasses.

Thank you everyone for your (life saving) advice. As soon as I send photos, dealer (UK) is sending me new alternator and regulator. I will order new battery then fit and test before use. once again many thanks for all your help. I will report back with findings. Ray

Hi everyone, just an update. Dealer sent me new voltage regulator, I ordered a replacement battery (dealer to reimburse). All installed and working ok. Also used downtime to change oil and all filters. Thanks again for all your invaluable advice. Ray.

Ray, we are very happy, all is well and that you are unhurt, and obviously can still see the computer monitor. Ironically, you name is Ray, and I don't know if you have heard of a very famous blind fella (one of our countrymen) by the name of Ray Charles. But in any case we are glad you did not wind up like him.

I once had played with batteries and a few days later stopped at a friends place on a super hot day.

Water skiing was the activity.
Being a hotshot water skier I simply rolled up my pants as for sure I would not fall.

Well, LOL, the motor stalled and I got dunked.
After an enjoyable 10-20 mins ride I landed at the dock and rolled down my nice slacks.
Well all I had left were shorts and and cuffs!
Water re-activated the acids and the pant legs simply went bye-bye.
When I got home mother really grilled me as I had never left home in shorts.

Not good enough, always use a full face shield plus glasses. Respiratory protection is required if battery is actively gassing.
