Last week I needed to start my tractor in cold weather (about 32 degrees F). I know that is not cold to many of you but, it is for me.:D I don't see how you guys get out there and plow snow.

Anyway, the tractor would not turn over fast enough to fire off. (I did use the compression release.) I ended up putting on one of those emergency jump start battery things and it finally cranked. That is probably the coldest temp I have ever tried to start it in. I suspect either my battery is getting old and weak or it is not heavy enough.

I recently removed and cleaned all of the connections and replaced the positive battery cable. Can anyone tell me what group and CCA battery it needs? The shop manual calls for something called a N70Z (whatever that is).

Works fine but this is still the first year. Out around year four and beyond is where we will see if it stands up as good as any $60 auto battery.

The kid who sold it to me said that was the standard battery used in all the big harvesters etc on the farm where all his family worked. A marine or in this case dual-purpose battery (both Start and Deep cycle) has a little different chemistry than an automotive battery. If it isn't used for a long time it will self-discharge less than an auto battery, supposedly, which makes it a better choice for seasonal harvest equipment.

I think it's just the best bang for the buck at the $60 level. Paying more might buy more - I don't know yet.

Something that will also help with start up is changing from the screw down type battery leads to using the more traditional clamp type for the lead terminals. This has made a BIG difference in winter start up. Cutting cranking time at least in half if not more...

I got to the bottom of the problem this weekend. I previously stated that I had recently cleaned all of the connections and i had maybe a month or so ago. Anyway, I decided to start with the easy stuff first and re-clean all of the connections. When I removed the ground cable I found corrosion on the inside. I cleaned it with soda, and dried everything well, reattched the cable. It fired right up. I also sprayed some lithium gress on all of the connections. Hopefully, that will help keep the corrosion from returning so quickly. The salt air here is really tough on equipment.

I was thinking possibly battery or possibly starter...:)
