Battery hook-up

Ready to hook-up battery on 6V 49' JD M. NO NOT HAVE MANUAL yet! I was told that the positive post went to ground and the negitive went to the starter. This correct? Hate to burn up wiring. Will get manual as soon as I can. Thanks
