..believe the Mar '00 one is dead. I'll try to add a bit of distilled water, but it looks almost full as-is. Sooo.. off to buy a new one. I've read the Optima reviews. Impressive, but expensive. I will use my 4100 about 50-100 hours per year I'm guessing. Is there some other battery that might make more sense? Would a "cheap" lawn and garden battery suffice? Thanks much,

I replaced the battery on my 4400 last year with a John Deere Hibernator battery. Reasonably priced and seems to be plenty powerful. If you've got cold winters, don't go cheap on a battery.

The real problem with the factory battery's is they are prone to leak acid /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Not many batterys out there that can give you a piece of mind like the Optima can...You cant believe how much damage acid can do in a short period of time...its not worth it to me to save a few dollars and potentially not solve the problem. I also have a 4100, and the factory battery leaked - so it was replaced with a yellow top optima 51 series...no regrets and no worries

Hope this helps

Optimas are cheap. Be sure to add the cost of repairs to any lower priced battery. Nothing is a s cheap as an Optima. I bought mine from Remy battery, and it WAS cheaper than the local AutoZone (which only had the wrong one anyway...)

AutoZone has it for $140. I'll see if they match the remy $115 price. But AZ has the 51.

Remy is $115, s&h is $15, so net $130. Maybe AutoZone will match..

Looks like my Optima may be done. About 8-1/2 years. So I guess that's pretty good. Go Optima again? Or are their other comparable alternatives nowadays?

I've been getting that amount of time from the JD Strong Box batteries. They aren't cheap, but they were cheaper than the Optima's when I looked.
