battery replacement terminal

I'm mostly with you Ray. On a product where they don't have aux leads molded into the cable, I typically don't have any problem crimping on a new end and having it run for years without a problem. But the Fords and Dodges, I replace the cables. Yes it is expensive, but like you say, when it is my reputation on the line why take a short cut.

I didn't even bother reading your message past the 1st sentence. saw all I needed.

you are compairing apples to wax fruit.

i'm talking home reapir stuff. if you spin wrenches for a living you are all about no returns.. no warranty work, no liability and selling parts to install for best case fixes. Nuff said.

I agree with both of you guys here. There is no way I would make some "Farmer" repair on a daily driver. Especially something my wife or child would drive. I want my daily drive to be 99.99% reliable. The cost of a OEM or aftermarket direct fit cable is not that bad. I have seen electrical components get fried from bad connections and that can get real expensive.

Now on the other hand a old tractor or work truck can get a "Farmer" repair. I know I will be the one operating it, usually close to home, and not very often. These type of repairs can be done all ways. I had my drive paved last year and the guy doing it had a 2 pair of Vise Grips holding on a GM style (junk side terminals that I hate) to a regular post battery. I have also made up battery cables for marine applications using soldered on end covered with color coded water tight heat shrink.

Each has its place.

funny you mention that. I used to know a guy that had some old beater farm vehicle that he drove around his farm... he'd drive to his tractor, and then take the battery out of the truck and slap it in the tractor, then trade back in the evening. ( guess he didn't want to have to buy another battery? ).. anyway.. onthe truck, his bat cable ends were 2 pair of those like 5" vice grips, with the bad cable in a piece of copper pipe that had been flattened, then drilled thru with a hole. there was a short 3/8 bolt welded to the side of each grip and the cable went onthere with a nut. he'd just clip them on and then unclp them to remove it. kind funny... a lil too redneck for me.. but.. :)

funny thing about vice grips... I see them used for many things. manual window roller handles. have seen one clipped to a jeep steering shaft in lieu of a wheel before!

I seen a guy share a battery with his boat and truck one time. Put the boat in, park the truck, take out the battery, put in the boat and go fishing, back to the ramp, carry the battery back to the truck, install the battery, load the boat and head for home. Too funny.:D:D:D

now I've seen that alot.. especially for huys that leave a boat slipped and only visit now and then.. prevents theft.. and you know the bat is hot when you start..
