@$#&%*! battery terminal on 5035

Replace the entire clamps and be done with it. I have done this with a good many of my family's vehicles and we never looked back. Some of the new battery clamps are nothing but cheese and I usually dump them on the first battery replacement.

I'd hack saw the facotry lugs off and install something like these. 76806_3.jpg

Then crimp and solder some proper terminal lugs to the cables like these.

Slip some heat shrink over the joints then button it up.

At least it isn't a tin foil like thing that Toyota puts on its batteries. That seems to be the main downfall of Toyotas.

On them, you cut the end off the cable and replace the end or replace the whole cable.

Agreed - those stamped terminals are pretty turdy. I'm sure they're cheap to make though. The worst is vehicles that have one of those with some kind of integrated fuse doo-dad on the positive terminal. Had to rig this up on my Frontier when its clamping mechanism self-desctructed. Flattened out part of the stamped terminal so I could attach it to a real cast terminal. :D

Most battery service kits have a small pair of Channel lock pliers in the kit for those stubborn nuts. ATEC & pcs Battery service kit , available at Acklands Grainger affiliates!

Cheers!

I'm thinking we can probably blame the EU for the battery terminal fiasco. Their RoHS requirements made mfg'rs take ALL the lead out of solder in electronics, etc and I am guessing that vehicle mfg'rs either chose or were forced to do the same with battery terminals. I knew a guy who drove a Triumph Spitfire back in the day - These new "clamps" kinda remind me of that car: I had the impression that it was so flimsy that a large beetle could have dented the hood.

But, know what? They're putting those no-lead terminals on batteries that are chock-full of lead! You can take the lead out of the clamp but taking it out of the battery ain't as easy as saying R-o-H-S.

Oh, as far as an 8.5mm socket - Come on, give me a break!! I see that they are actually made and sold (even 9.25mm sockets!) but, really? (http://http://www.nationaltoolwarehouse.com/14-Dr-SAE-and-Metric-STD-Turbo-Socket-Set-16-Pc-P39294.aspx)
