Battery

   / Battery #11
I had the battery tested last night and it was toast. It is a Bobcat Brand battery and was the 2nd such battery since I have owned the machine. The original battery died after 3 months or so and Bobcat replaced under warranty. I currently have just under 200 hours on the tractor and approaching 4 years.

So, I got a new battery and will put it in this weekend when I go to the Farm. Hopefully that is all it needs and I won't need to fool with any battery cables. I also got a voltmeter so I can diagnose these problems like KOUA suggests rather than go by the loudness of the clicks!

I'll post back Monday on the results.

Hopefully your problems are over with the new battery. Be sure to grease the connections to help head off the dreaded cable corrosion problems. Battery's are funny things. they can last 10 or more years but many don't even last half that long.

Well, it was the battery. The battery tested at 0% strength even after being on a charger for 15 minutes. I put the new battery in on Thursday evening and the tractor started easily.

Thanks for everyones help.

Good deal. Now did you coat all the connections with grease after installing the new battery?.. I like to use No-ox-Id. but any grease is better than no grease.

James - yes, I did coat the connections with grease I got from Auto Zone (can't remember the brand name). I also got a volt meter and played around with it a little after installing the battery. Pretty neat device. Thanks for all your advice.

Wait, are you saying just regular old grease on the battery posts? Or are we talking about dielectric grease/antiox? I've never heard of normal grease on battery posts; but if that works to slow corrosion without interfering with connection, I'll be on that like flies on stink.

Regular grease, will not be quite as good as an anti oxidant grease, Like the NO-OX-ID I mentioned, but it is better than nothing.

Hmm, think I'll give it a try next time I'm messing with the battery on my Kubota.

Paul I have use this No-ox-Id stuff for over 35 years. It really solves corrosion problems. It was always shipped by the battery manufactures with each stationary battery plant installation for phone systems. That is how I learned about it. It is available from many vendors including Amazon. And it is good for many things beside battery connectors, as show in using it for antenna fittings. I have used it for many years in the land mobile industry to coat the screws that go thru the carpet of an automobile to screw down control heads and speaker brackets. If you don't do something to protect the screws they rust and will break off under the car's floor pan. But if you use this stuff, they come out like new years later when you remove the equipment. It is good stuff, I dont have a clue what is in it. They say it is not toxic. I haven't seemed to suffer/suffer//suffer// suffer any dain bramage from it.:muttering::hyper::jump:

So it must be safe!
