I need to get a new battery. Is there a special kind of battery for a tractor? Can I just get one with the same specs on it from anywhere?

I just took my old battery to the local auto parts store and asked for the highest CCA's they have in that size battery.

First, measure your battery L x W x H. Then check what side the + and - terminals are on. Note the CCA written on the battery.

Then go to a discount place like Sam's Club, Costco (preferred), or Walmart and get the closest thing to the OEM as possible. Costco has the best return/exchange policy in my experience.

There's no difference in an auto and tractor battery. I do the same as DK35vince - take it out and replace with highest CCA possible that will fit in your space.

FWIW, I started using a Battery Tender after reading really good reviews on TBN. Since I've only used it for a year or so I can't vouch for it extending the life of the battery, but it sure is nice to know a seldom used machine will crank with a fully charged battery. I expect, too, that battery life will be improved as others have noted.

We have bought the last couple of batteries for the tractor from Tractor Supply - they seem to have a very good return policy if you have any problems. We found the price to be about the same as elsewhere.

Don't forget to also check the type of terminal - many are a simple post, but some will have a flattened post with a hole for a bolt, and some industrial machines like skid steers might have a threaded bolt that accepts an eyelet type terminal.

Not entirely true, there are some differences, sometimes. There’s another thread in process now about the exact same thing. But still, 9 times out of 10 a car battery is just fine.

Also check that posts of new battery are same orientation (positive on left, negative on right, etc..) as existing battery
Edit: like Dixon already said!

I bought one there a few weeks back, turns out it was deader than a door nail, no problems with the return, they didn't have another one.
I went to Interstate Batteries & bought one with more cranking amps for a few more dollars, i'll probably use them from now on with all my battery needs.

Agree whole hardheartedly with the battery tender.

Check the policies for Sam's and Costco. I'm pretty sure someone wrote in another thread that Sam's policy and Costco used to be the same but now Costco has changed and Sam's is better.
Sam's:
Free Replacement 36 months
didn't quickly find Costco's online.
