How big is the broken bolt, I'd get a nut the same or close to it's diameter,
fire up the welder, weld the nut to the broken stud, put a socket and breaker bar on and
start working it back and forth and it should come out.
welding nuts on with a stick welder is my preferred way to remove broken bolts.
The last one I welded on the head had rounded of on so I laid a large nut over it, welded it on turned it right out.

This is my first thought and my usual go-to for removing broken head bolts. According to Messick's, it's a M12*1.25 bolt with a special head. It's about $4 or each. So a little under 1/2"

The problem is if I screw it up: the spindle it's thread into is a threaded shaft (bevel gear, K5668-33500); each one of those cost $148, not counting labor or the time to get to it.

I think I'm gonna pass on welding it myself. I'm going to load it up Monday AM and take it to my local welding shop and see if they can TIG a nut on it.

Thanks,

Much ado about nothin'.

As planned, I took it to my local welder (Terry's Fabrication, Ardmore AL). He has a lot of experience removing broken bolts. It took far longer to lift the ZTR than it did to weld a nut and remove the bolt body.

Just to make sure the other bolts weren't on too tight, I had him remove the other two as well; if one or both had broken, he was already there to remove it. They came out fine.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

I mig weld a washer on the broken bolt first, way easy-er than a nut, and more heat goes to the bolt. Than I weld a bolt or piece of scrap metal on the washer. Let it cool and shrink and turn the bolt out.

Like I told Terry, I was this close to doing exactly that. But I didn't trust myself to not fork it up.

$20 well spent IMO.

I like that and will have to try it at some point. I can see it working better for the shorter breaks.
