Be careful with chainsaws, invest use chaps

Reading this thread put a bit of a scare into me and I popped for a pair of chaps at Lowes. Just $55 for the Husqvarna Pro Forest chaps, which was cheaper than Ebay, with no shipping costs.

I have a good friend that is in the business of selling chain saws, etc, and every time I wince, grimace or whine about the cost of safety equipment, says to me... "It's cheaper than a trip to ER" .... I'd smack him but I know that what he says is true...

I just looked at their website and cant find those chaps. They have plenty of saws, but none of the safety equipment shows up online.

Sorry, I wasn't clear - I bought them at the local store.

I have been talking about getting a pair for awhile especially since i have been clearing out our woods of dead fall and storm damage. After reading this post I bought a pair yesterday and wont be doing any chainsawing without them. Thanks for the kick in the arse and I hope everything works out and you recover quickly.

Many years ago I was cutting mesquite trees out of a fence line and had one pop on me in the process. It forced the chainsaw backwards into my thigh and as it happened I was thinking "Oh cr!p, finally done gone and hurt myself good."

Surprisingly enough, because I had let off the throttle trigger shortly before, the chain didn't even break through my Wrangler blue jeans and the saw died when the fabric bunched up against the chain housing. Still have those pants.

I haven't bought chaps, but, I did have a local lady make me a couple of pairs of "fencing jeans" which are blue jeans with extra sections of denim sewed into the thighs and shins to make them thicker and more resilient to barbed-wire and such that I wear when building fence or chainsawing.

Try testing those pants against a pair of chaps and I can guarantee the chaps will win. Those "fencing jeans" may be OK for fencing, but after having one close call you would be wise to soon make another post telling us how you just bought a pair of chaps to wear when you use the chain saw.

+1...;)

OK I've never worn chaps, and Like I said I gave a pair away cause I thought I'd never need them, I'm reconsidering getting a new pair now.

But I almost always wear high cuff gloves, boots and long pants. Well today I go over my nieces new house and her husband is out in the front yard, young guy in his 20's and he's sawing up a huge oak log with a large Husky Rancher, No gloves, short sleeves, short pants, and the worst, open toe sandals! Right away I thought about this thread and warned him that I thought he was at great risk of a serious injury.

Then he brings me around the back to show me what he's been working on back there today, he's got a hand held power post hole auger and has been boring 4 foot deep holes for deck piers, dressed like that! I told him again in front of my niece that it's dangerous, they just kinda shrugged it off, what else could I do.

The sandals really shocked me, I only wear them at the beach, can't imagine doing heavy work with them.

JB.

JB steer that young man to this website or show him some gory pictures of what a chainsaw does to flesh. I don't care how young and fast his reflexes are there are enough folks walking around hacked up from chainsaws...that will testify that shorts and sandals will not keep things from happening.
I used to be fairly confident that I knew enough how to handle a saw after working with chainsaws since I was 10. Now that I am older and wiser it is by the Grace of God I didn't hurt myself more often or more seriousely.
