Think I may have a bear in the yard. Can someone posts pics of scat. I Googled it and pics look like what I am seeing: two mounds - size of my hand, one is dark reddish brown loaded with berries, the other is darker brown/black with berries...

We heard in the spring that there may be one in the area.

I will post pics in the AM.

TIA

We used to get an old male black bear every year when the skunk cabbage would be in blume. The dogs new better than to get to close, and you could always see where it would scratch its but on the trees. It was no big deal, and would be fun to watch. The black bear around here are pretty timid, and unless its a cow with cubs, will run with a little noise.

Fairly good bet it's from a bear. We have lots of black bears in our area and it is common to see their scat just as you have described it.

British Columbia has the largest Black Bear population in North America and Vancouver Island has the densest population of bears in the entire province.
OPPS that's where I live.
:confused2: :)

Start looking for wild cherry and apple tree's with broken branches. Usually a sign of bear.

Got some around our woodlot. They have raised havock with wild fruit trees that had be pruned and were shaping up nicely.

I could make them go away but they have to make a living just like the rest of us. :D

Just be wary if you see little bells in the scat.:D

Bears are common in my area but we are seeing lots this year. We've had lots of rain and a great berry crop so they are staying lower than usual.

Most around here are blacks but there are lots of grizzlies in the higher areas.

No doubt in Nova Scotia yours is a black bear but, just in case, here is an article to help tell the difference:

There is a story out there about hikers who were venturing into the woods and were warned by the ranger that the black bears and grizzly bears were very active and that they needed to be careful. They were told that, for safety reasons, they should carry a whistle to blow to scare the bears and pepper spray to ward them off should the whistle not work.

The hikers asked how they could tell the bears apart. The ranger thought about it and said, "well, if you're in an area near the bears, you'll like as not see their waste. Look at their droppings. A black bear's has traces of berries and acorns in it. A grizzly bear's droppings, on the other hand, has whistles in it and smells like pepper."

Old joke, but kind of cute.:)

What else could it be?

I was in NH a few weeks ago and found a small pile near a restaurant were the bears raid the dumpster and outdoor barbecue pit's grease pail.

I actually picked it up and saved it as a joke, this was very dry and solid. The size of a large dog pile, dark black color with small seeds and pine needles in it. No foul smell, I would of expected to see garbage in it since they are habitual dumpster divers according to locals.

All the dumpsters up there have heavy wood enclosures around them, you can see where the bears tear them up trying to get in. The kitchen workers at one restaurant told me the bears are quite bold and not afraid of people, one guy told me a bear came within 10 feet of him while he was having a smoke, grabbed a half full grease pail and took off into the woods.

Wouldn't want to see the scat after that

SOoooooo, They don't go in the woods... only in (my) back yards. Emailed a few pics to my brother and he confirmed it as bear.

I don't hunt BUT have enjoyed bear meat a few times - Hmmmmm!

Know the wife won't be too impressed now. Along with coyotes, she may never venture to her horse barn again!
