Bear

   / Bear #31
I have way more bears than people around me especially now although these are not black bears. In my experience most of the time they want less to do with you than you do with them. The few that push the boundaries around the house get a load of bird shot in the butt and once is usually enuff to convince them to keep their distance.

Like others have said keep your garbage, dog food, bbq grill inside so as not to attract them and enjoy your new neighbor. They are a hoot to watch!

Wait if you are seeing the scat and not the bear you don't have a bear in your yard just bear crap. AND you may have answered the old "where does a bear go" question

Now Boone that is a pic I took of those Okefenokee bears that are trained to eat tourists not one of our little pet cuddlies:D

Lloyd here is a link to a video showing how the Brits take care of bears! Looks to be more effective than pepper sprays and much cheaper than firearms.

Here's an old bear that hangs around my place. Needless to say, I stay alert especially when going from one building to another, at night.

Nice pics...

I had one about that size walk down my next door neighbors driveway a few years back. We met on my way out to the car. He looked at me and just kept walking. I went back into the house.

WOW....!!! Adjuster and river guy...That bear is HUGE, and I'm sure fast. :confused2:
So, no one has answered my questions, WHAT do we do if we're out bowhunting or even collecting firewood and there is a black bear?
I'm told not to run (I'm old anyway)
It's unlikely that I could get up a tree and certainly not as well as a bear can.
Should we carry pepper spray? now seriously, does that stuff work? If you have a headwind you'll get more than the bear.
I have a friend who is a retired game comm. agent and he said "they have poor eyesight and unless they "wind" you, they'll ignore you" FINE, but he had no advice IF they DO wind you.....
I like the birdshot idea, but that means carrying a shotgun. I do have a .40 GLOCK but I really don't want to hurt a bear if it might go away and I'm not sure that a handgun would put him down anyway....at least not before he took me out. :ashamed:
It's funny, I've been hunting for 40 years and never even seen a bear but I am getting reports that there are bears on my land (maybe I am now the deeded owner of THEIR land) and trail cams all around are getting photos of bears. One day I'm sure that the current residents and I will meet. :ashamed:
Need advice here, guys......

Just be aware as your about, try not to come up on them unexpected. Having a dog with you is another good pair of eyes, ears, and a way better nose. Worst thing to do is panic, Don't ever run unless you are mere feet from shelter and he is many yards off, stand up big, make a lot of noise and BACK away slowly. Definatly fight back if it is a black bear attacking you and play dead if it is a grizz. I have never been charged by a black bear but probably a dozen times by a grizz and all but one were definite false charges.

A friend gave me a 454 causul which is more cannon than it is pistol but if I am carrying something specifically for bear protection I still prefer a 12 ga. A pistol gripped sawed off one doesnt take up much more room than a big pistol, put a sling on it and you don't even know you have it on your back. 1st round bird shot for warnings or in case you get attacked by a grouse or something and either slugs or slugs/buckshot alternating.

With our weather around here I always figured pepper spray was pretty much worthless as the wind is always blowing and by the time they get into range of the pepper spray they have either stopped their charge or they are gonna get you even if you spray them. I think that is also why I prefer the 12 gauge because of not only how hard hitting it is at close range but how fast you can pump rounds thru it. Because of having that ace up my sleeve I have held off longer on false charges and while I would have started firing with a pistol and probably with a rifle I was able to hold off longer and have not had to shoot as they have stopped, the closest one in stopped at 10 feet although she started slowing at @ 25'.

Mostly don't worry, just enjoy yourself and be aware, I see bears daily for half the year, have hundreds of close bear encounters(within 50 yards) and love watching them and having them for neighbors. And no I am not some nutcase like that Treadwell from California, I don't push their boundaries and respect them and they do the same for me.

Thank you, Rick.....all good ideas.
I am almost always alone....we live in Fl. until I retire in 2 years. No dog, we travel too much. But I can try to keep my radar on.....and your advice is well taken.
Thanks again,
Rob
