I never said you need to move the feed bar “to and for” The feed bar has three detents on the in feed side of neutral. Slow, medium and fast unless you want a smaller chip you would normally just pull it all the way forward. It is not something that takes any thought to do, it is very easy and natural. Have you ever used or seen a Salsco PTO unit run? I am sure you are very happy with your unit. I have run most of them including the Bearcat and was just giving NHSawyer my opinion.

That sounds like a nice feature. I have the Bearcat 70554 which is just a basic model. It doesn't even have an exhaust chute. For my use, it has been just fine. As a point of reference I have attached a photo of my chips. The largest are about 1/2". I just thought I would add the importance of looking at chip size if you were planning on using it for compost. I have seen the chips that come out of some of the commercial chippers and they would take a long time to break down. It sounds like the Salsco has addressed that.

Well I just came back from looking at a used Bearcat 74554 and I liked its performance. Tuesday I visit a dealer to look at the Salsco after that I should know enough to make a decision.

Just out of curiosity, why did you not look at Valby chippers. They are very well made, run smooth and turn out very uniform 3/4" chips. I've had 2 of them, one manual feed and now a hydraulic feed one and have had no problems. Grape vines, and hemlock branches cause me no trouble.
