Bears and pistols

See that "paw" in the top photo. A standard size dinner plate won't even begin to cover a track from that, in the mud. One swipe from that paw can completely remove a persons head. And you want to take a pistol for protection........ good luck.

I don't agree. I saw a .357 put down a big brown in 2 shots. I would wager a bet that .357 has far more penetration than buckshot. I would think Buck Shot would only serve to piss off a bear even more as the wounds are superficial. Logic says you need to hit vital organs and not put flesh wounds on him...
Think about 1.25 oz in very close pattern moving at 1200 FPS. -- A 12 ga at close 5-15yd range will stop virtually any land animal. And with a pump you have 5 of those "cannon" shots.

Snobdds - there are two things that can be derived from your comments.

1) It's totally understandable why so many tourists are killed by bears in AK. They have the same opinion of a handgun's capabilities as you.

2) Should you ever have an encounter with an enraged bear - may God go with you.

Well that bear was killed with 2 .357 shots.

How about those apples...

Semi auto shotguns are much faster for most people to get in multiple shots in the shortest amount of time, AND are softer recoiling and therefor allow more accurate follow up shots. AND are extremely reliable. I have fired thousands of rounds thru semi auto shotguns and I cannot ever remember a stoppage. ALSO many people "freeze" on pump guns or short stroke them. Everyone says "pump", but when the chips are down give me a semi auto any day of the week. And I have the experience to know. Just saying.

Yes - and the little Dutch boy stopped Holland from being flooded with his middle finger. The years I worked for ADF&G, Alaska, we were given a pump 12 gauge for protection. Pump shotguns are less expensive than autos. Five shots of double buck.

And the bottom line is if you are out there with even a small pistol, it beats nothing at all.

Without a doubt a small caliber pistol is not "ideal", even a large caliber pistol is not "ideal", BUT as you said, it is better than nothing. The firearm in your hand is far better than the one you left at home. I would much rather have one of my shotguns with 00 buckshot or my .308 semi auto rifle, but I don't carry those around with me either. the 9mm I do have.

gotta be better than trying to pluck a little limb off of a tree and whipping the bear to death with it. :)
