Beaver problems.....

   / Beaver problems..... #21
Years ago beavers decided that the old mill pond below our house would be a great place to set up houskeeping. They soon had the water level up so high it was beginning to flow out into the road and over the remains of the earthen dam/berm. Every day, I would take a couple of feet off the top of their dam and every night they would build it back up. The wildlife folks put in a rigid plastic pipe (6"?), but the beavers just plugged it full of sticks and mud. The trappers also had no luck. Finally, we decided that the beavers had as much right to the place as we did...and they weren't really endangering our house or barn...so we left them. A couple of years later, they'd eaten themselves out of house and home and moved on. Eventually, the stick dam washed out and we now have a sedge/cattail meadow where the pond used to be.

In the beginning I had beavers in my lake. But they ate all the birch, alder, aspen etc and moved on. They didn't have to build a dam, they did have a big house in the middle of the cattails on the far end of the lake. They were interesting to watch and at night you could hear them down there - doing whatever beavers do at night.
