Thanks for all the replies and I learned a lot today!

1) NEVER post on a public forum you have a beaver problem, especially if you have no idea the majority of your land is a State regulated wetlands or wetland check zone.

2) When inquiring about beaver status with your DEC, DNR or whatever three letter acronym for the state agency that handles beavers and wetlands, use a pay phone, they DO have caller ID.

3) It is a crime to disturb any dam or beaver house. If I don't post for 3-6 months you will know what happened and if you get PM'd by someone looking for cash for beaver bail, it's not a hoax, it's me!

The good news is it's going to take a few days for someone from the state to get here and seeing how that beaver made it better in a single day, it will surely be back in place before a state worker can get here! I have complete faith in those beavers!

Actually, they said I have a good chance of getting a nuisance permit to remove them, but they really had me going when I first called!

Hey you could turn your beaver problem into a profitable venture...

...set up a web cam and web site to capture their activity...and advertise it as "live furry beavers"...just make sure your server can handle the traffic you'll be getting...
Good Luck...

Funny how they are protected in one state and a pest in another. Here in TX, they are open season year round and it's highly encouraged to kill as many as possible. Karen just killed one about a month ago. It was a beautiful head shot as it swam in our pond!!! I've killed about a dozen of them in my pond since digging it. Worse then the damage they do to the trees and damming up creeks is the digging into the dam of a pond. It's the number one reason for the dam to fail.

When I lived in CA, the beaver was the only animal that you could legally hunt at night with a spotlight. We shot dozens of them one night out in the Delta. They cause massive damage from digging into the levies there. Some of them where in the 80 pound range!!!

While I was removing it this morning the big SOB swam right up behind me and scared the living crap out of me! I tore down even more today:

Be careful, they are more likely to run/swim away than attack, but they have been known to bite and when they do it isn't going to be just a scratch.
