Beavers !!!!!!!!

   / Beavers !!!!!!!! #22
I had a beaver in my pond. He/she did a great job of removing some of the trees and brush on the banks. BUT, they plugged the overflow pipe. They built a seamount 10 feet high to access the top of the pipe. After I cleared the pipe, I built a beaver excluder over the pipe inlet. Worked well.
Then last summer, they moved on, so I removed the excluder. Now, they're back so I have to rebuild an excluder again.

I wish someone would bring me a pair of beavers. I have a stream that I want them to dam up and make a pond.

My family has done battle with the evil beaver for many years. Traps work for a while then they get wise to them. Three years ago we trapped five. The next year we trapped two or three. Last year I had one that was trap wise so I unplugged the culvert very early in the morning to drop the water level and my Dad and I waded out to the house in the late afternoon. I took a long stick and poked the house and Dad shot the beaver when he came out.

They are back this year and so far have avoided traps and I have tried wading to the house twice with no luck.

My Grandfather and likely my Great Grandfather then my Dad spend years trying to get rid of them. Now it is my turn. My problem is there is a several mile long bottom above and below my land that is stair stepped with beaver dams. I am in the middle of the bottom and the bottom divides my land. To get to the back of my land I have to cross a levee. The beavers plug a drain pipe and a culvert and then the road washes out.

I can manage to get rid of them for a few months then more move in.

I wish you the best.
Snares work well for trapwise beaver, but unless you have ice you really need to be diligent and know when you have one. I may call myself a trapper, yet I don't believe in letting an animal suffer.

well, I called in a trapper. Have caught two in two days.
Someone asked about relocating them.. Yes, I relocated them to that big creek in the sky.

I got tired of them damming up the creek, and causing my pasture to flood.
I tore out their dam several times to give them a chance to ''relocate themselves'' they wouldn't listen. I even installed a sign that read ''no beavers allowed'
They were warned before they went to that big creek in the sky.

My BIL‘s dad encouraged gators in their ponds to keep down the beavers and turtles. He let a few be relocated to them over the years. Sure kept us kids from swimming in them years ago.

Game warden called the BIL one night to pick up a gator. BIL arrives pulling his cattle trailer. Warden laughs and hands him a feed sack.

A real trapper is my next step.

The dog & I walked down to the far end of the little lake yesterday. Saw something I've never seen before. The beavers had chewed into a small pine tree down at the lake edge. They haven't toppled it yet but are well on the way. I would have never guessed that a beaver would touch a pine. Must be a young one that hasn't been educated yet.

"Has anyone ate it before". Yes, several times. It's VERY greasy. Best when bar-b-qued so all the fat can drip off.

Watch out where you are and what part of the beaver you eat. The Alaska Natives of SE Alaska - they have beaver in those parts - make a delicacy with the tail of the beaver. Prime target for botulism. Many get ill - a few die each year.
