You could try removing the master link before cutting the chain. From your description I think there's too much tension to allow that, but maybe not. To remove it, finish sliding the clip off, pry off the outer plate, and push the two pins out through the two inner links being held together. Putting some blocks behind the chain might help, and would a pin punch.
Even if you can remove the chain without cutting, I'd suggest replacing it. Otherwise it could happen again.
