We've been living on the same 45 acre farm my great-great-great grandfather farmed when the soldiers rode through on their way to the battle of Gettysburg. We have handwritten deeds and notes from the 1830's. All we want is to keep farming and preserve the land. We raise hogs and an occasional steer. Our daughters know how to go outside and grab a live chicken and take it from clucking to the table. We've taught them how to grow their own food, to preverve it, and to respect nature. I don't consider myself a homesteader, but I'm proud of the fact that I can live off the land and I respect that land for what it can do for me. Taking care of the fields (soil conservation), woodlots and waterways will benefit me for years to come.
In the last 5 years, we've had some new neighbors build and move in within 500 feet of our house. The new neighbors, (four families in all) complain when we spread manure, plow, harvist or shoot skeet. Their son and his friends have tresspassed, and the last time was cought on the property by the State Police. I was a nice guy and dropped the charges, but I'm still not sure why. They have all built huge houses with all sorts of outdoor lighting. Their sons ride all sorts of ATV's and jeeps across anyone's property, will tear up grass and cover crops with a "so-what" attitude. They all have snowmobiles, and after the first inch of snow, they are screaming across my barley.
I know how much it costs me to heat my (1800 sq ft) house, I know how much my property taxes and insurance are, I can't imagine how much it's costing them for their 4000 to 5000 sq ft houses.
It's happening all over, and there's nothing I can do about it, but learn to live with it.
