Beginning of the demise of my neighborhood

Yeah, the Interstate sure changed the lay of the land. The other change was when we dropped the traditional "one village, one vote" method and went to the popular vote. And of course since most flatlanders settle in Burlington (our one city in the entire state), as Burlington goes, so goes the state.

Ahem. Your FIL sounds like a smart man.

( Sorry David, that won't happen. I wished for it way back in the 60's for California. We have everyone here from every state, but by far its been infiltrated by those from back East and unfortunately they all seem to bend to the left if you know what I mean. The way I see it, with real estate here so expensive, I can sell my home, move to most anyplace in the US save for NY city or Boston and make ends easily meet. Problem is, I have yet to find a climate I enjoy more and that includes Hawaii and definitely Florida. I'm still trying to figure what it is about Floridas climate that people find attractive. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

I cheer every time the temp hits the minus thirties. Cold weather is the only hope we have that Vermont won't succumb to urban sprawl.

Hey Guys I know that complaining is a constitutional right but come on. The President and Congress have been busting their but to cut taxes and get big government off our back so we can live the American dream. Isn't the American dream to buy land and build your dream home? It may be that some without the means will be left out but in a way that is the point. We all have to be smart and work hard to keep up.

But do they have to build on the best farmland..?

We've been living on the same 45 acre farm my great-great-great grandfather farmed when the soldiers rode through on their way to the battle of Gettysburg. We have handwritten deeds and notes from the 1830's. All we want is to keep farming and preserve the land. We raise hogs and an occasional steer. Our daughters know how to go outside and grab a live chicken and take it from clucking to the table. We've taught them how to grow their own food, to preverve it, and to respect nature. I don't consider myself a homesteader, but I'm proud of the fact that I can live off the land and I respect that land for what it can do for me. Taking care of the fields (soil conservation), woodlots and waterways will benefit me for years to come.

In the last 5 years, we've had some new neighbors build and move in within 500 feet of our house. The new neighbors, (four families in all) complain when we spread manure, plow, harvist or shoot skeet. Their son and his friends have tresspassed, and the last time was cought on the property by the State Police. I was a nice guy and dropped the charges, but I'm still not sure why. They have all built huge houses with all sorts of outdoor lighting. Their sons ride all sorts of ATV's and jeeps across anyone's property, will tear up grass and cover crops with a "so-what" attitude. They all have snowmobiles, and after the first inch of snow, they are screaming across my barley.

I know how much it costs me to heat my (1800 sq ft) house, I know how much my property taxes and insurance are, I can't imagine how much it's costing them for their 4000 to 5000 sq ft houses.

It's happening all over, and there's nothing I can do about it, but learn to live with it.

My neighborhood started going to the dogs when I moved in. Any place that would have me is not worth living in.

Sidebar: I was recently looking at 81 day, around-the-world cruise on Cunard. Top of the line suite goes for ~$185K per person. Can't remember what steerage class went for, but was wondering how many people's cruise could be ruined if I was let on board? Jed Clampett among the Vanderbilts....

Also wonder if they take Visa AND Mastercard AND AMEX AND Discover AND.....
