A neighbor has a well-abused 525 that I think he ran low on oil in the rear axle. The right outboard axle bearing finally went, and the axle proceeded to wear through the housing until in cracked and the axle came out of the bull gear. I removed the axle & housing hoping that replacing it would be all that was required, but I was greeted with a handful of ball bearings at the bottom of the bull gear. The cantilevered load from the axle must have been more than the bull gear bearing could take.
He has the shop manual, but I cannot find any good pictures or a description of how the bull gear is held in place -it covers only the differential and pto gears from what I can see. Can anyone give me a rough idea of what is involved in removing the bull gear, and how is it supported? I imagine that it is not feasible to fix since the rest of it is pretty rough, but it still might be a good winter project. Thanks for any help.

i think you have 3 options:

1. leave it be, use it to power PTO equipment on the lot
2. find a good rear end for scrap price
3. sell the entire tractor for scrap

getting parts from Russia is quite a hassle, the price would be probably more than what the tractor is worth. junk it and find another Belarus.

I think scrapping it is where he is headed. I found a used axle & housing for a reasonable price, but I would still need to disassemble the rear end to replace the bad bull gear bearing.

That helps - thanks. It looks like I need to replace #38. How can I get the actual part number from the figure number? I only see two parts listed. Maybe it is obvious, but I'm not figuring it out yet!

I talked to a wrecker to price a used rear axle and housing, but I didn't ask about getting to the bearing. I only found a couple 525's being parted. Good idea though - I'll give it a shot.

Backtrack in the link to the full catalog to 50 series. Also, the MTZ link might be useful to you. Your tractor is made by MTZ

Maybe it is my browser, but when I open the rear axle-final drive page there are only a couple parts listed - a washer and a gear. I must be missing something?

I don't see the full parts list either. I looked the bearing up in my 820 book. I think they would be the same as 500 series. Its a# 217. ----measures 85x150x28mm.
All four rear axle bearings are the same number. Its a standard bearing. Its easy to find a china made bearings on line. I needed some bearings a few years ago and waited until someone listed USA made bearings on ebay.
