That looks good, will be stronger for sure.

Maybe while you're burning on that hitch weld a lug on it somewhat centered between the four bolts. Then you can yank hard with it with all four bolts rather than double forces on just the lower two.

I'm new to this hobby, so take what ever I say with a grain of salt.
Before you pant it, wrap your corners. And if at all possible make your stops in the heel of the gusset not out on the ends of the gusset.

Thanks guys, it is pretty nasty looking out at the ends. Your right I should have wrapped around the ends but its hard enough for me just to go in a straight line! . It was a good practice experiance as it is just extra bracing. I think I did get good penetration on my first passes. Good enough for a weekend hacker on farm equipment I guess.

Next week I am going to build a shovel/spade to slip on the end of my pallet forks with some 1/2" plate & some channel I picked up at the srap yard. i think I can do better next time!

It will be stronger but I think you just need to slow down a little and take a little time to make it look nicer. First, use a sanding disc or worn down grinding wheel to clean the paint off. It looks really rough where you ground it and you also cut a groove in the existing weld. Try not to have stray arcs as they can lead to a crack.
