I planted Jewel black raspberries. They fruit on last year's cane.
Oh. Those are a bit harder to manage, but my recommendation is to try them without a trellis and see if you need one. You can always hedge trim them if they get unruly. The reason I say those are harder to manage (floricane varieties) is that you need to prune out the old canes, while keeping the new canes at the end of every season, so the pruning is slow and labor intensive. With primocane varieties, you cut everything to the ground in winter and they resprout with new fruiting canes each spring.

I have been considering some black and raspberry bushes. Do they put offshoots out on their own once you have the first plant?
My experience is that raspberries will propagate quickly and take over any area you don't regularly mow. Blackberries propagate but much slower. I think it's because raspberries fruit on the new canes (so you can cut them all down at the end of the year) but blackberries bear on the 2nd year canes.

My berries are planted next to a chain link fence, so I put some posts 2 feet away from the fence and run wires to contain the canes between them. Works pretty well.

Depends on which type of raspberries you have. Floricane varieties fruit on second year canes. Primocane varieties fruit on new canes.

FWIW: We set up our trellis system a little differently, with two trellises, one on each side of the bushes. It helps keep the canes up and I think that it makes the berries easier to access. It also makes pruning pretty easy, but not as easy a primocane varieties for sure.

All the best,

Peter

I have no idea what FWIW means.
I set up a two opposing wire system and did not like how it turned out, so I went this route.

Mr. Ponytug, what did you use? Was it 3 strand or some kind of mesh fencing?

Long ago we tried raspberries. But like the strawberries - the @#$% chipmunks would not leave them alone. They would eat the fruit a couple days before ripe.

One of the trellis's still remains. Quick and easy. Plastic pipe and chicken wire. Behind the farm wagon.

I have wild raspberries which shoot and propagate by birds and animals.

The blackberries I planted in chicken wire cages so they just run up the wires.

I only have 2 of the blackberries. If I want raspberries, there are so many I just grab a few, so does my neighbor. They have a tendency to bush out vs. the blackberry.

Just some T-posts connected by two strands of smooth fence wire. We did tie the pairs of T-posts together across the trellis. Nothing fancy. We might have used an extra tall post at each end, but I don't recall exactly. Today, I would probably add a stay at each end, but it worked.

All the best,

Peter
