I bought a Savage bolt action .17HMR for varmit shooting. It is quite heavy with a bull barrel but is extremely accurate. I believe that they are one of the best quality guns on the market today for the lowest price. I would assume that they also make light weight youth models. I really like the accu-trigger.

Savage Axis or Edge could do the trick. I have one in .243 and it is extremely accurate. You may also look at a Remington Model Seven.

Depends on what you call heavy.

It's a very nice handling gun and can be had in .243 if one can be found.

it's a great gun. I was thinking it might be heavy for a 9yr old girl.... which is the intended shooter of said gun, according to robert.

We bought a .243 Savage for my daughter-in-law and it is very accurate.I load 100 gr.Accu-Bond bullets and it is a fine deer rifle.I am a big fan of the Accu-Trigger;Savage has forced all the manufactures to up-grade their triggers.

Well like usual, I'm late to the party:laughing: I would have recommended the Thompson Center, Venture compact, friend's kids have some and they are plain nice. Good build quality too.

Well, Ava decided she liked the savage axis in the muddy girl camouflage more than the plain looking Remington 700 so she now has her .243. She is a very happy little hunter. Will be taking her hunter safety course as soon as possible now that she is old enough. Thanks for everyone's input in this older thread, it was helpful in limiting what to show her.
