Too expensive for me. I can't believe no one makes a PTO driven cone spreader with a hydraulic adjustment for spreading width and a hydraulic open/close for a reasonable price??? $3,500+ seems like a lot. If a spreader without the hydraulics is $1,000, where does the extra $2,500 come from for 2 hydraulic rams & some actuators?

Supply and demand. When I picked up my '08 diesel chevy it didn't have digital information center on it.(long story short I had finalized the deal on another diesel while another cutomer wanted the same truck I looked at but never put a deposit on it or came back the following day as promised. On the day I was supposed to pick it up I got a call from the dealer explaining the issues. I ended up getting a truck with more options but didn't have the DIC on it from the factory as listed in the window sticker) I even got the dealer to throw in running boards and a bed liner.

The DIC dash panel was there on my truck when I picked it up. Turns out it was already all wired for it from the factory and all they did was swap in the dash panel with the appropriate guages. Someone had left the old panel in the truck or I otherwise wouldn't have known.

So long story short, the DIC info package was something like a 500 dollar option but all you needed to do was purchase the panel since it was all wired for it.

I picked up a tiller this fall and it's sold under 3 different brands with the most expensive brand being almost twice as much.

Respect your opinion, but not quite 100% in agreement.

Maybe I should buy a nice poly hopper spreader and install my own hydraulic actuators? Couldn't be that hard to replace the on off manual handle with a hydraulic ram.

The variable spread rate might be difficult, though.

I posted a hydraulic actuator on the thread yesterday, seems like the easiest way. Not sure if you ever purchased rocksalt in bulk. I would be careful using a poly spreader, while it's going to last, I've never seen one with an internal agitator and rock salt can become hard as a cinder block when it gets frozen. You might want to get a metal unit and rhino line it or replace the cone with a poly when it rusts out in a few years. I recall seeing agrisupply.com selling the replacement cones. When I purchased mine I saw a replacment listing with the papers they send you.

If your purchasing your rocksalt by the bag or pallet then poly would be fine but when getting it by the ton in bulk......

Anyone know of a national retailer that sells rock salt by the pallet? Can't find anything local here in Spokane, WA believe it or not....

It takes a lot of work to make a standard pendulum spreader or a large spin cast spreader unfortunately-but once you buy one they will outlast your tractor in Vicons case.

You can buy a small top fill spreader drop spreader from Pronovost- Hardy that mounts on a skid loader mount and it is operated with a hydraulic motor.

It would be easy to buy a quick attach hitch from one of the site sponsors and mount the hardy spreader on it.

The Pronovost Hardy salt and sand drop spreader is a basic drop spreader that shuts off completely, has a spring mounted tarping system and has a manually adjusted delivery gate.

I just bought an Agrex spin type (not pendulum) for a little over $1,000. Has agitator, poly hopper and cab controlled on/off for the opening.
