Best battery size for HF 25000# winch for log skidding

PTO winches like the Farmi are really great. Don't have one, don't have a 4 wheel tractor, but have used them. Get one sized for your tractor and I don't think you will ever regret it.. Doesn't even have to be a all wheel drive tractor, it is amazing what you can do with a true logging winch.

Thank you members ( at least the majority ) for helpful advice that has steered me away from wasting several hundred hard earned dollars.
It looks like I may have to bite the bullet and invest in a PTO driven logging winch.

It's always good to tap into experience.We all can't be experts on every subject.

I used to have a Jeep with a 9K winch. Like most have posted, paint will dry faster on a 40 degree day than an electric winch will skid a log. The jeep however was a great log skidder. The one vehicle I truly have regretted selling.

You mean people actually SELL their logging winches?!!

I looked for used for 5 years and never found one in a size range that matched my tractor. The only one I saw was a bit on the big side and severely damaged. Finally bought new (and then saw a decent used one come up for sale a month later).

Actually, no, my friend Ken never would have sold that winch, as long as he lived. But... He passed away from cancer recently. His widow isn't gonna take up logging, so she MIGHT be looking to sell it.

Ken was a helluva guy, and he'll be missed. He's the one who told me about Farmi winches in the first place. Telling me to buy one was a priceless piece of advice. As luck would have it, I chanced upon a used one for sale myself. It was on Craigslist listed under "brush hog and wench". Luckily there was a picture. I paid $900 for mine. Practically stole it.

I just purchased a new Farmi 290 for my BX24. We had a storm come through on Fathers' day that devastated my little 9 acre forest. The forester marked 65 trees for timber sale and I have many more that are too small or too damaged to sell. I heat with a wood fired boiler and heated floors so using the wood will be no problem. For years I have dropped trees, cut them to length and carried the pieces out to load on the tractor. The hills and density of my forest keeps me from getting close. This year I finally decided I am getting too old for that extra work so I bought the Farmi winch. I haven't put it to serious use yet but the little testing I have done has me convinced this was the right move.

I did some on line research and the Farmi got very good feedback. I asked my uncle (who has a farmi winch) and my brother for advice. They are both enablers so I pulled the trigger and bought my winch. My uncle did have a good perspective on a logging winch. He compared it to a farmers combine. He said you may only use it a couple weeks out of the year, but when you need it, nothing else will really do the job.

Yeah, that used to happen to me also. I'd finally give up looking, buy new, then whatever it was would turn up within a month or so. So now I force myself to the tipping point, then put it off for another month or two.

I WANTED a tiller REAL bad. Searched CL for over a year. Finally gave up, bought a plow. Two weeks later a lightly used tiller shows up on CL for a REAL bargain price.
Needed a beehive, about to buy a new one. Put it off, one showed up on CL for $20, unused.

I have the HF 9000 lb winch mounted on my car trailer. I use a set of homemade jumper cables made with 2/0 welding cable to power from the group 65 battery in my F150. Pulled an 8N tractor that had a loader and a Otis elevator gear case on the 3 pt for ballast with no problems.
