Best chain lengths?

Chains slid off this rock like water off a duck. Estimated @ a ton, it took the jeep, trailer, come-a-long and one tired out square1 four hours to move about a mile
If I ever do rocks again I envision using tire chains to form a sling like configuration.
A twist clevis works well to attach chains to the drawbar.

I once fastened together a pair of old tire chains like that for rocks, pulled with a Jeep. Never could get it to work. The rocks would simply roll, causing the chain to come off over the top. Maybe if you could get the lower front chain under the rock and in front, then fasten it into a basket so the rock couldn't come out, it might work. A tractor with a loader solved my problem.

I have three 20 foot chains and a two 10 foot chains. With my grapple and backhoe thumb I hardly ever use chains anymore. The only use my chains get is chaining the tractor on the trailer. For that about 12 feet is ideal in my case.

I got tired of wrestling long chains for tractor to trailer tie down so, cut four chains the right length; grab hook on one end and slip hook on the other. They now do double duty 1 or 2 together for 75% of my chain work. have several 10 and 20 footers for bigger tiedowns or longer reach. I have an assortment of 15 shackles (clevises to some of you, but riggers/sailors use shackles) that I use for two slip hooks together or mixing with straps or cables. Cables my last choice of rigging gear but have a long piece of 5/16 soft stainless that works great through one or more snatch blocks like for guiding a tree down.

Caveat on pulling trees; a guy I know used two SBs to attach his tractor to a tree, took the strain, the tree had a mind of its own and went a different way, that tree tried to pull his tractor through the first snatch block because he did not leave enough length between the block and his tractor. Lucky; no hurt to either man or tractor except washing his shorts.

A 10 or 12 foot 1/4 inch chain is very very handy. A grab hook on one end and a slip hook on the other. Not quite big enough for pulling heavy equipment but great for most everything else.

The Sentry makes the Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace Guard look ADHD

There are two stories going on here.

First is a dimwitted in-law that, no matter how many times I asked not to drive over the drain tile / on the lawn persisted in doing so even after I placed the smaller rocks that now surround the Sentry, crushed my drain tile.

After I pick axed through 20 feet of 12" deep compacted gravel to replace the tile I hired Sentry to keep the knuckle head off my lawn. The drain tile and grass are holding up very well now.

The 2nd is a terminally ill young girl in a town north of me was making regular trips to a hospital south of me for treatment the year Sentry took up his post. When asked what "wish" she had her reply was to see her favorite colors, Pink & Orange, everywhere she looked. I don't know that her regular travels took her down my road, but if they did I wanted to her simple wish to come true.

Is it ok to use a grade 43 grab hook on a 5/16" grade 70 chain for my Kubota B7800?

It is OK but you cannot put more than "Grade 43" stress on the assembly.

I recommend buying a Grade 70 hook to go with your Grade 70 chain.

$6 for safety.

I do that when I don't have or can't get the right hook, but I use grade 43 hooks of one size larger: 3/8 hook on 5/16 chain.
