Kubota b2920
I've just recently bought a Kubota B2920 and want to get a PTO wood chipper for it. I've done a lot of searching and haven't found a ton of information. I'm wondering if anyone is running this machine (or similar) with a chipper and how its working. I'd like to try to get the largest capacity possible for the machine without having something that's going to be too much for it or stall it. The usage is for primarily hardwood branches, brush and pruning. I don't need a professional grade chipper, but at the same time don't want to have a part time job repairing and re-configuring / re-engineering a chipper. It looks like woodmaxx, jinma and liberty chippers all offer big capacity for the money, but at the same time it also looks like people have to do re-engineering and repairs immediately to make them usable and safe. Any feedback, ideas or suggestions are most welcome.

I have a Jimna 6, its a 6" capacity unit and i haven't done anything to mine except get a new set of blades. Ive had it for 5-6 seasons and its always worked flawlessly.

I got it originally for my JD870 (28 HP with 25 hp at pto) and never had any issues. The 6" wood tended to bog it down a bit, but then again im usually chopping up the 6" and larger for firewood anyways.

I don't chip hardwoods, so i cant answer you there on how it would work with that species of wood.

After using the chipper on my new 45Hp tractor all i can say is WOW. the chips just flew out of it.

Thanks. Did you buy it direct or through a local dealer? One thought I had was that a local dealer probably does a basic QA, maybe tightens the bolts etc, and if that's the case it might be a good buy. (There's a local dealer near me).

I bought mine direct years ago. no dealers in my area at that time.

Theres a great guy here ranchhandsupply that deals in them. Very knowledgeable and does all prep work.

I got my new set of knives from him

I picked up a used Wallenstein BX40 this summer for quite a bit less than half of the pre tax price of a new BX 42. The previous owner had just turned the blades over to a fresh edge for the first time. Works very well with my B3200 (23 PTO hp). It has a 4" capacity. Working at capacity it will bog the tractor down if I feed big branches in too quickly. The newer BX 42 does have a 4" by 10" opening which allows feeding Y shaped branches, but I couldn't justify the extra cost for homeowner use! I did consider one of the offshore units, but I am very happy with my gently used Canadian made unit. It was also less $$$ than the new offshore units I found locally.

Hope this helps

Craig

I have a bxm 32 wallenstein chipper shredder and find it works great on the b2920, it says max 3" but im sure i put larger branches in(3.75")aprox and the tractor engine doesn't bog down at all. I went with the chipper shreader combo because small branches go through chipper not chopped up, I love the shreader combo and don't regret buying it, most of the wood i chip is soft wood ,cedar, spruce but have put birch and some maple in with no bogging of engine. I also have a wood stove so max 3" capacity is good because i burn anything bigger in diameter then 3"

I have a Woods 5000 Chipper/Shredder. Like taos, I find the shredder just as handy as the chipper, especally for yard clean up (those small diameter branches that fall during a wind or other storm).
The chipper can consume branches up to 5" in diameter.
Only downside is the machine drops the chips under it.

The Woods 5000 is built by Bearcat (who also sell them to the public) and is rated at 15-30 PTO HP....your B2920 puts out 21 PTO HP, so it would be a good fit. Your machine may bog down a bit with anything over 3.5"-4" though. Depends on how fast you let that stuff feed.

My Crary Bear Cat 70554 works very well on a BX2200. 4" max size but rarely is that done. Mostly twigs to 2" since everything else will heat the house. It has a heavy flywheel and four blades so it is hard to bog down.

Like Roy, the only disadvantage is that it throws chips out the bottom and they have to be scraped out after about a bushel of chips are made. Moving the tractor/chipper is possible but seldom practical.

An add-on "chip ejector", or whatever they are called, is available but extremely expensive and prone to clogging according to reviews. When you buy your chipper, it is worth the extra expense to be able to throw chips into a trailer, a pile, or the bucket of another tractor.

The new version of the chipper is here:

Great replies everyone and really helpful, keep them coming. I like the idea of a wider entry on the wallenstein 42, it seems like all my trees have very forked and crooked branches. The bearcat also looks pretty interesting and there is a 5" for sale near me (though it says it requires 30+ PTO HP for some reason). I've done a lot of reading on the Jinma and while interesting I think its going to be too much for me to modify / repair and a chipper's something I really want to work properly (pretty dangerous machine!). Anyone know of good used equipment places online? (not a lot on my local CL or at the dealers).

I just raise the 3PH (PTO still running) and use a fire rake to pull the chips out from under...works pretty good. I don't move the tractor until I'm either done or just moving to another pile (PTO off when I move).
This isn't what I'd want to do if I had a massive amount of stuff to chip, but it works quite well for the 2-4 time a year I do yard clean up.

That "chip ejector" is called a blower chute, BTW.
