I'm a lawn fanatic so quality of cut is absolutely first with me. I just paid $700+ for a John Deere JX75 push mower which is absolutely the best cutting rotary mower I have ever seen. If all I was trying to do was keep a nice yard, I could have bought a Yard Machine or Murray for around $300 that would have done a nice job. THe JX75 is rated as the best mower by Consumer Reports, it is not rated as the best buy. We have a local dealer that sells both Grasshoppers and Walkers. He says the Walkers have a better quality of cut but do not have the overall servicability of the Grasshopper. I have also talked with the ExMmark dealer but have not looked at them or priced them, yet. I do plan on visiting him before spring and I WILL check out the Ferris. I mow 2-3 acres which takes me about 3.5 hours on a 46" lawn tractor. This summer my tractor broke down and I borrowed a Grasshopper 725K w/ 60" deck. It took me 1.25 hours to mow the same amount and the cut was better. It sold me on ZTRs. What mower do you think is the best value? The Grasshopper 721 was $7500+ and the Walker was around $7000. Any opinion about the mid-mount deck or the front deck being better?

What a subject!!! Quality of cut depending on type of grass, types of soil, fertilizers used and of coarse one persons beauty to another. To see how you are doing take a 2x4 and stand it on edge after mowing and go back 10' and see if you have a straight line or if you have a bunch of whiskers sticking up. Reasons for the whiskers are dull blades which stands on it's own. Other reasons are ground speed to fast(bad design or just to fast period?) This can be fun as I know I have seen people who will settle for some really lousy cuts and of coarse the commercial boys need as high of speed and as good of a cut as can be bought for the money.

Art,I've been told by our local dealer that Kubota was going to release a ZTR mower this fall.Nothing yet that I'm a ware of,dealer says probably won't be out until next spring.Do you know anything about this? If this were a fact,and I was in the market for a ZTR,I would sure wait to check it out before I bought anything else.

Kubota has told us there is a new one on the way to be seen by dealers in New Orleans for the first time. Kubota has always built a good mower deck and of coarse the tractors have done well. There are so many companies in this business now and so many are so good it will be interesting to see what will be new. Spring will be when they will be available I just hope they can get enough of them built instead of the BX factor.

Yes,the BX factor.Same thing happened when the B2710 was first offered for sale.I'm not so sure the marketing people hav'nt followed Harley's lead in creating the market,and suppressing the supply.Sorta like the Chevy Corvette,which ususally sells for list-plus.
Sorry guys for the late response. EddieW I think the grasshopper 721 is an excellent choice. The smooth running 3 cyl gas Kubota engine that it has is just plain awesome! I dont have much experience with the walker, but Kubota and Grasshoppers I do. Any company that uses a Kubota engine has got their act together.
As far as the new Kubota ztr, yes New Orleans is the place. I will find out more the week of Oct 22nd when I am scheduled to go to the showing. The new Ferris is also something to start talking about. With its 4wh suspension it sure to be a hit with the customer with the bad back. however the quality of the mower deck could see some improvements. Well built but. Quality of cut first, Right EddieW. Have a great weekend. I'll let you in more on the new Kubota ztr when I know more. Yes the question about a front mount or a mid mount. A front mount has versatility for attachments, the mid has maybe a vacuum. My choice is a grasshopper front mount, they are coming out with a deeper deck design for the front mount similar to the mid mount deck. This will improve the quality of cut.

Roy, another "feature" of the 21 hp Kubota is its quietness while running. YOu can actually talk to somebody (or listen to the radio) while operating it. The deck makes more noise than the engine.

Check out the Scag product line. I have been using a Turf Tiger (ztr) this season and am very pleased. They may cost more, but the machine is very sturdy and I think will last.
