I don't have the statistics, but fortunately most officers, by far, retire (as I did) without ever shooting anyone. However, did you mean "use" or "fire" his firearm? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I came very close twice in my career, but when the suspect looked down the barrel of my gun, he dropped his in both cases. So I "used" my firearm, but didn't fire it. The first time that happened was at night and the suspect was in his car with the doors locked and windows rolled up. And I had a rookie with me. When the suspect grabbed his pistol from the glove compartment, I dropped on one knee as I drew my weapon and yelled, "I'll blow your head off" and he dropped his gun. I had already started pulling the trigger and caught the hammer with my left thumb to stop the shot. Talk about someone a split second from dying. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif As it turned out, that dummy's gun was a starter pistol that wouldn't even shoot anything but blanks; he said he just carried it for a bluff in case anyone tried to rob him. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
The funny part was a few years later when I was a Patrol Lieutenant one of my officers asked me what kind of score I shot on the range. I told him and asked why he had asked. He said that a day before he had talked to an officer in another division (the rookie I'd had with me that night) and that officer told him he didn't know whether I could hit anything or not but that I was the fastest draw he'd ever seen. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
