Best for Gravel Driveway Maintenance?

I use a landscape rake, angled to kick gravel back into the driveway, then straight to smooth and spread. I don't have gauge wheels, so it doesn't get perfectly smooth. When it gets too uneven, I use the box blade to cut in an smooth it out or add/smooth additional clay when too much has eroded. My driveway is about a quarter mile long, with several hills and dells (8-10' change in elevation between them).

... I've got 1200' to get to my house and my lane is short by comparison to many. Last summer I built a land plane that is 3' wide so I can work the tire tracks and leave the grass strip between that my wife is quite fond of. ...

I'm in a similar situation-over 1200 feet, and two tracks with a grass strip down the middle. Do you have any pictures or drawings of your creation?

I have about 900' of uphill driveway to maintain & have the same assortment of implements as nybirdman. The box blade is also my favorite & I use it more than anything else. For the driveway, I start with the box & finish with the rake. Compared to the box the straight rear blade is not that useful.

I WOULD like to try a landplane though, Gordon's looks like it does a great job. I might have to come check it out sometime as he is quite nearby.

This would not be a very good idea:rolleyes: unless you have a pocket full on money ready to go purchase one or get the material to build one. The LPGS is the go to implement for road-driveway maintenance IMO. I have 4 road build-maintain implements, all heavy duty. Easily the most frequently used implement on the roads is my LPGS, just don't need the others very often once the road is established how you want it to be.

You guys don't have snow, many freeze thaw cycles, and the need to plown in Texas. Up my way, there is nothing you can do for a gravel drive that will go 10/years untouched. Even the gravel county roads with little traffic and much thicker bases get all screwed up during spring thaw

For sure,
Here in Quebec frost is 4 feet and unless U have that 4 ft of nice crushed stone anything bigger will show its ugly face on the surface sooner than later.
Pot hole paradise is what we are.

For ease of use, sure a LPGS is hard to beat. I've never tried a box blade or rake on the lane but actually prefer the rear blade over my LPGS. I find I can do a much better job with it but it won't allow me to keep the grass strip. I might have to get a rake to pull some of the gravel back in from the sides and center strip without pulling out the greenery. Sounds like a good plan to me.....Honey, I need another attachment to work on the lane :D

Don't have pockets full of $$$, but I could build one.

I like Gordon's pretty well & have exactly the same top surface material to work with. The grass is the center is not really desirable here as it creates a ridge that makes winter plowing difficult.

That is fine with me. You are welcome to come over and grade my driveway. Hopefully it will stop raining some day.

A LPGS will cut the sod off in the center or along the road edge. Looks messy for a couple weeks lying in the road but eventually it dries up and disappears. I can collect and pile the sod with my arrangement. I don't get all the roots so it grows back but it looks good for a year.
