I have been sold on Schaeffer's for quite a while. Just did a road trip on business and stopped into the Schaeffer HQ and got a tour of the facilities by the head man himself, John Schaeffer Shields. A fantastic guy, and though he is getting up there in years, has a mind sharp as a tack. I am even more convinced about staying with Schaeffer greases, along with many of their other products. I got close up look at grease blending and detailed look at what they are putting in it and how they are doing it. A lot of high quality people working there at Schaeffer that have a work ethic that is refreshing to see and take a active interest in how they are doing everything. Each person who fills a tube or a drum puts their name on the container.

There is no doubt that Schaeffer's claim to fame centers around their greases. They purchased Mobil's facilities next to them and expanded into it and invested 5 million in renovation and automation to meet demand for their greases. While us small folks might not be all that familiar with their stuff, the commercial folks sure are. And though they are not allowed by contract to say the actual name, they make a number of greases especially for that company that has something like a shell for a logo to meet demand for specialized greases to meet customer needs. That company spent over 2 million in R&D on some specific open gear greases and gave up and came to Schaeffer for the product. Schaeffer now sends out greases specific for that other oil company by the rail container load. I watched them make the stuff.

I had a chance to talk with Mike, who is getting quite old now, but was the primary developer of their grease line up and was behind the grease development that Shell Oil (oops, not supposed to say that) couldn't develop to meet customer needs for open gear greases. He has over 75 years working for Schaeffer. He started when he was 16 years old with only a 3 yr break in the Army during WW II. Schaeffer has even set up a small section in the plant for their reps to do individual testing and development of products. Met 3 reps in there at the time doing some testing on some stuff they had thrown together. How many oil companies encourage sales reps to come into the plant and do their own little testing and development of products to meet customer needs?

Langford, the best Schaeffer's grease to use in your JD Backhoe will be Moly Ultra Supreme #238 NLGI #2. If you'd like to get some or if you're currently using another one of Schaeffer's grease and you'd rather use just one grease for most everything, call our offices and we'll help you figure it out.

We used a Teflon based grease from Hydrotex at work on heavy machinery. I have a partial box in the shop I purchased 12 years ago, but not sure they make the same exact product by name. Beat anything they had bought us before, and you could not beat it out of the pins. Not good in high speed bearing applications, but great in pins & bushings.

Pretty expensive, I paid $45 for a carton of 10 tubes back then. But there's probably 4 tubes left in the box, so it has been worth it to me. On the job greasing the Kobelco 210 excavator every day, a box of 10 tubes would last me about 3 weeks. Where the cheap stuff they were buying would last me a week, greasing 3 times a day,and looked like a goose had been following you around.

The downfalls are, it is pretty stringy, which is a good thing. But you made sure you had a rag around the fitting when you pulled it off, or it would string out, into the wind. And, it did not pump well out of the gun, when it was in the low 30's, or below.

There you go...what is expensive when taken on just a per tube basis works out to be pretty darned cheap when you factor in the total amount of grease you use in the same time period plus it out and out lubricates better.

Scooby, call 1-800-325-9962. that is it head office of Schaeffer in St. Louis. They can help locate a rep for you. Schaeffer is in a lot of countries. Too bad the question wasn't asked before I went to Schaeffer HQ. I could have got the info for you while I was there. The 238 grease mentioned is a great one. Very tacky. I primarily use 274 for my semi trucks, so I just use it also for everything else from my pickup, to my zero turn JD mower, to my NH compact. It has a little better pump ability than 238 without sacrificing anything on pound out and wash out characteristics. Even a great grease for wheel bearings! Meets Timken, NTN, RBCA and many other bearing manufacturer specs. I haven't felt the need to have multiple greases on hand. I have found 274 to be a great all around grease from Schaeffer. You can see that it meets all specs for JD, Case, NH, Komatsu, Ford, GM, and Chrysler, among others.
