I sometimes forget how good we have got it here in the country towns of OZ . Our house is never locked , all my gear is in an open shed , we go for walks at any time of night and school kids are safe too walk to school on their own . (The larger cities would not be as safe though.) We often see a car that has broken down on the side of the road around here , sometimes they may sit for days and no one touches them , i wound the window up on one once so the rain would not get in .

Reading these posts on this thread reminds me of part of my post from the automatic gate thread..."After having an automatic gate...which keeps out the uninvited rif-raf, helps keep the place secure, and the dogs happy inside, I could not live without one. It has made a world of difference. A closed gate makes a statement to the outside world. And...if someone knowingly goes past the gate uninvited, past the dogs, then they are probably up to no good and can visit the end of my gun...Ain't America Great!!"

At least for my wife and I, security has always been something built into our psyche. Just like having a fire extinguisher always ready, security is something that should be built into your environment. I think most of us on TBN are of that mindset...that of being self reliant. That's why we live the way we do, and why we all relate to each other so well. It's odd that most people that live in the suburbs in developments don't really think this way, even though they probably have higher odds of being mugged or robbed. The way your house looks, your activity schedule, and how you present yourself while outside all add up to how a potential criminal will react. And that goes for anywhere...being in a parking lot...driving home from work, or shopping. Having a gun, (ready), dogs, security cameras, etc. are all different links in the chain of self defense and reliance. They all connect together to make up the sum total. It's just a way of life... You can't count on 911 out here.

I know it doesn't directly affect home defense, but if our incoming president gets one of his listed wishes, to eliminate concealed carry permits nationwide, I'm afraid crime will go up rather than down...

I heard that from his own lips, and I would like to know how he plans to do that?

As far as I know, concealed weapons permits are state-issued, not federal.

Secondly, with the Heller decision behind us, I don't think any gun control nut wants to test the limits of the decision by passing a federal law to limit concealed carry. To much chance of it being struck down by the Supremes.

And, unless there is a sudden illness, the Supreme Court Justices most likely to retire in the next few years are liberals, who voted against an individual right anyway. He can replace them with more libs and we are still OK.

My first guess would be just like how the Federal goverment gets the states to set their highway speed limits, MONEY.

The problem there is that there is a direct connection between Federal highway funds and traffic laws.

It is a lot harder to see a direct connection between any federal funds and concealed carry laws. Maybe law enforcement grants, but since there is a good correlation between accidents, deaths and speeding it is easy to make that case. Since every study I have seen shows a positive correlation between conceal carry and crime reduction, I don't think the new president wants to get into a court fight.

But, I stand ready to make the biggest contribution I can to the NRA if they try to push that through.

BTW, the Supremes didn't rule on the meaning of "bear arms" in the 2A, only because it wasn't a question before the court. They did strongly hint that they would have upheld a right to carry in some form. It would be a wonderful thing if we could get this issue before the Supreme Court before we lose a conservative...

With the national and global economy circling the drain, I think the incoming administration is going to have bigger fish to fry than concealed carry laws.

I haven't heard about bail out requests by Smith & Wesson....

Hey, has anyone looked at those Marlin camp carbines? I think they are discontinued, but I stumbled on to them a week or so ago and did some reading. They looked really neat just for the fact that if you have a 1911 45, you could get a camp carbine chambered for the same round and it took the 1911 clip, too. Pretty neat in that the pistol and rifle used the same clip and ammo. The 1911 is a proven pistol. The 45 is a heavy round with plenty of knock down. Just wondering. I know little about specifics.

I always wanted one in 44 mag.

I don't think the Marlin Camp Carbine came in .44 mag., did it? Ruger had a .44 mag carbine called "The Deerslayer" for an all too brief amount of time. I should have picked one of those up.

How many people can talk with the authority of experience on this thread???:D

For me, and I think you will find this true for lots of us body counts were a game that Saigon and Washington played. Most were just counting the bodies that were still walking back into base camp with relief in their soul and counting how many days were left.

Does calling in an air strike on an NVA resupply base from a hilltop OP and then going in and counting feet to play the washington game work? Does that count?............

God bless the VFW VET..................Dennis
