Had I had a gun, I probably would have backed away in the same direction only drawn my weapon and made a bead on the guy outside the car. He probably would have talked the guy with the gun out of things. Had the gunman come out of the car, I would have shot him.

Now think about it. I could have choosen to run away with or without a gun and probably been safe. But had I had a gun, I would have stayed in danger. Why? Because a gun makes you feel like a bad a** when you are young and/or stupid. So does a car that you know how to use as a weapon. Instead of running away and living a fine life, you take a chance that was not needed to satisfy some urge to get the better of some rival.
If you could back away safely to begin with, you have to know that drawing a weapon afterward would very likely result in your own legal trouble.

If anyone reading this thread thinks that owning a gun makes you a bigger person in any conflict, you don't know anything about owning a gun.

Likewise, if anyone reading this thinks that owning a gun gives you the freedom to travel anywhere under any circumstance, you are once again mistaken.

There are laws everyone must obey. There are additional laws a person with a concealed firearm must obey. These are additional responsibilities, even restrictions on where you go while carrying.

If I had the slightest expectation that I'd need my gun going into a particular spot, I'd avoid it at all costs.

You saw them with your stuff and got out of the car without your weapon drawn?.

This thread is getting way too general. Every state has different laws.

In some states, if you are threatoned.. you have no duty to try to retreat.. you can stand your ground if you are in a place that you are legally allowed to be in.

You mean like making a night bank drop deposit ? If that was your job.. you'd avoid it? So.. if you are the night manager / teller making the night bank drop you'd not do it and get fired?

I think I'd go make the deposit.. and have my carry gun with me in case someone decided to try to off me to steal some cash.

IF is the key. These threads have read like a person with a gun suddenly loses the ability to reason and use discretion. Obviously, if your daily job puts you in the 'hood as an electrician, you're going to go there. If you are responsible for making deposits, you go, no question.

Exactly. I don't see any messages here with a bunch of ccw holders all loading up in a car forming a big posse and then cruzing the 'hood' looking for bad guys to shoot.

For the most part.. i see lots of law abiding ccw holders talking here.. and an occasional freak.. plus the guy that likes the bar fights ;)

Bad guy has you at the end of a shotgun. Drawing right now doesn't seem like a good option, especially if backing away seems to be working.:D

Now, once you've backed away to safety, how many gun owners would recognize this is a police situation vs. how many would draw and shoot. I, for one, would keep my sidearm holstered. And, you're right, laws vary depending on the state, but you still have to know that you're going to incur certain legal expenses in your defense, assuming you survive.

Who said -ANYTHING- about backing away to safety.. and THEN drawing and shooting. I've not seen -ANY- comments like that here.

If you have a gun trained on you, like in your example, what makes you think running is going to keep you from getting shot? I expect to get shot, or shot at, if there is a muzzle pointed at me. I think any court would think in that direction as well, if a self defense situation occured..

Look at the news.. what happens to people that aim guns at LEO's... they get shot when they put the leo's life in danger... pointing the gun at the leo is the act that creates the 'fear of death'.. etc.

Things have been a little heated in this thread , i hope i hav'nt done anything to make it sound like us Aussies are not your brothers . I can't say any more about gun rights as ive given my word not too , but what i'd like to say is this .

Please remember that I/we will die beside you on the field to defend our homelands and our way of life just as we always have .
