If you search on your local Craigslist for Ridged foam insulation or contact some commercial remolding contractors, you can find anywhere from 1"-6" 4x8 or bigger sheets of rigid foam insulation from remolded buildings extremely cheap. The sheets are in like new condition too. There are two companies in New England with warehouses all over with various sizes and tons of it. For example, one quote was $5.40 for a 4x8 sheet of 4" Rigid foam insulation (1" 4x8 new at lumber yard is like $19, never mind 4"s).

Sorry mx - missed your question until this morning.

Did you spray it yourself or did you get a contractor to do it?.
Contractor.

Looking at the site they don't seem to be too homeowner installer friendly.
LOL .... yeah .... for the walls (not attic space), the NuWool is not a homeowner kinda thing - too much (expensive) equipment involved ....

For starters, the rig uses a fairly large vacuum/bale-chopper/blower combo sorta thing .... that was mounted in a large box truck. Bales of (compressed) cellulose are fed into a hopper on the unit, broken up and blown thru the hose to a nozzle/gun. There's also a water/fluid tank on the unit, which provides a mist of water/binder solution at the nozzle tip, to make the material stick/clump and stay in the wall cavity.

Tarps are usually laid out on the floor (we used OSB) and a helper uses a large (3" ?) vacuum hose to pick up excess material and trimmings, to recycle them back into the unit, while the operator is spraying the wall cavities. The trimmings come from a trimmer, which is about 18" or 24" wide which planes the installed material flush with the wall studs. It's kinda like a wide motorized paint roller on steroids ....

The extra space inside the box truck was used to store bales of cellulose.

I think at the time I priced fiberglass (by the roll) at the box store (Lowes/Home Depot) and this actually ended up being cheaper, for more R-value, installed. The depth of insulation in the walls is 7", except where the girts are, and then it is 5.5" deep ....

For the attic, I'll price it D-I-Y at the box store (which includes free use of the machine to blow it in I believe) and probably give the guys that did the walls a call .... might be cheaper just to have them do it.

Excellent suggestion!!
I'm about to "double insulate" a 40x15 apartment built into my 40x60 workshop. That will save a lot of $$.

I like to be able to just tack that stuff up then finish over at my leisure.

No problem. I am planing on insulating my house after the addition. It's post and beam so the walls have 4" true studs so I'm just getting a ton of 4" insulation and cutting it to fill the cavities. Then an air barrier when I do the siding. Should be a nice tight 24R when I'm done. If I wanted to I could put an extra 2" around the outside for 12 more R value for $300

These may be the guys Marco is referring to - they are out Framingham, MA:

Insulation Depot

I'm planning on checking with them for foam board insulation for under the floor in the barn.

Im going to use Roxul mineral wool insulation in my shop building and house. It really is fire proof, not make believe fire proof like the other stuff, wont absorb water, the water just runs off it, bugs and mice arent fond of eating it since its made from basalt rock and steel slag.

You can get it in unfaced batts that are quite stiff that are pre cut to fit in stud wall openings or they also have it in 4x8 sheet boards .

It costs more than fiberglass but less than foam. Seems to me all the other choices cant compare to how good this rock wool is. Im doing the shop first then next spring - summer a house.

That's a good product with specific uses, sound proofing and fire rating for passing code. Only two kinds of that roxul have decent thermal ratings, 15 and 13 R-value for a 3.5" stud cavity wall and also its not "fire-proof". It has a 1 hour burn time that is good for a garage interior wall/ceiling for example. They make a special fire version that has a 2 hour burn time. Fire will burn it up, just gives you time to get out before it burns through.

Yeah and it will also soak up water if it gets enough on it.
