Best Matress for the money

We have a Sleep Number for a decade or so. It's a king and each side can be set separately, wife likes soft I prefer a bit more firm. Not inexpensive though, it does deliver a comfortable sleep.

I've had the same experience. I had some serious lower back pain before we bought the sleep number bed. I'm very happy with it.

In Seattle, my son once worked for a matteress maker co, the place is unknown to most people. and the building has no name. He told me they make mattresses for all the name brands and just put the name tag on whatever the stores want for a brand. He said many expensive ones were no different than cheaper ones but the internal springs often were where the cost really is. Also lots of fluff on some, like pillow top, hard sides that are just heavy cardboard etc..He brought me a very good matteress that I paid $200. for and the wholesale cost, still have it, metal spring guts that have held up very well. My older son has a posturpedic and swears by it..Matteresses are a scam for most of them so do your homework and look at the insides. If the sales people won't allow that I'd leave.

And just how do you go about that? Bring a razor knife with you? Salespeople surely won't let you slice one open to look.

I've had a "Tempur" memory-foam mattress for at least 16-17 years and it's just as good as the day I bought it.

Yes, it was expensive... but, as it's turned out, very inexpensive for all the years of great sleep that it has provided.

It rests on a slat frame.

I hated our memory foam mattress from the day we got it. If you sleep warm they are a furnace.

Some materess sellers have intersprings you can look at before you buy.

Waterbed all the way. I've had a california king for nearly 20 years. I found the frame on craigslist for $100, then bought a new bellow, heater, liner for about $150. It has solved my back issues completely. I used to have all sorts of back problems with the memory foam type that I had for 6 months.
Never got the whole hype on them. Had a GF that had one back in the 80s. It was just weird to sleep on, the sloshing/wave motion got old real fast, the heater used quite a bit of electricity and you had to be careful not to do anything that might cause a puncture. ISTR it required special sheets too.

Get a 4x8 sheet of 1/4" plywood and put it between the mattress and the box spring. When the mattress finally poops out, you have a sheet of plywood for projects...lol

Look into a latex mattress. Not cheap.
I have an Taladay latex mattress that I like very much. No springs or box support structure. I bought the base model then tweak the firmness with various densities of latex toppers. The toppers can also be used to rejuvenate an older failing mattress. As noted, not cheap. And heavy too.
